Jake doesn't say a word after that. When we get to my house, we walk inside. "Sit down." He says. So, I sit. "What the hell is going on?" He asks. I sigh. Get ready for a long story. "Well..." I begin.
"Hey mom." I say. She stares up at me, her eyes showing no emotion. The sight breaks my heart. My brother died, my dad left us.
"I...I need to leave. To get out of this house." She says with no emotion in her voice.
"Mom-" I start.
"No. Tell people I'm on a business trip. There's a bunch of money in the safe. The code is 22-49-44. My bank account is already cleared out. Here's some money. I love you, but I can't do this anymore." She says as she presses 3 grand into my hands and walks out the door. I hear her start her car and drive away.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Jake asks, sorrow filling his face.
"I couldn't. It happened a few months ago and I couldn't burden you with that." I say, crying. He walks over to me and holds me tight, which only makes me cry harder.
"I will never leave you. I'll never walk out on you like they did." Jake says, which makes me start sobbing.
"How much do you have left?" He asks. I know because I've been careful with it. It helps that Parkview gives me a discount on pizza.
"I have $1,990 left." I tell him. "But there's more in the safe."
"Stay here." He says, his jaw set in a straight line. I look at him, but nod anyways. He walks out and I can hear him starting up his truck and driving away. I just hope he doesn't do anything stupid.
