In less than a second I'm across the rooms and in her arms crying. I’m just so happy that she’s finally here. She strokes my hair as I sob into her knitted sweater. My heart swells as her scent fills my nose.
"It's okay..." She whispers, "It's going to be okay. Just take a deep breath and tell me what happened. Where am I? And how did I get here?"
When I am finally able to raise my head, it takes me a minute to clear the bees from my mind so that I can explain things to her. As I talk I notice that she doesn't seem surprised. She nods and smiles rubbing my hand to prompt me to go on.
"... And so he brought you here for me." I finish.
"So this... Kye... is your fiancé?" She asks cocking a wrinkly eyebrow.
"According to him she is. And he's been hunting us all this time. We've already lost all of the others to him." Sam Two tells her.
"And you haven't tried to find them yet?" Nana asks.
"That's what we've been trying to do," I tell her, "But Kye controls everything that happens in this house. We can only see the rooms he wants us to see and we only go where he wants us to go. We were looking for the room where he is keeping the others when we found you."
"I see..." She says thoughtfully.
"Okay, I'm going to be the first to say it. How much do you know about this dragon business? You didn't look the bit thrown by the fact that your grand daughter is a mythical creature. You either don't believe any of this, or you already knew it."
Nana smacks her up the back of the head slightly.
"You need to learn some manners." She tells her.
"Please Nana," I beg, "I need to know if you know. The only source we had to tell me about what I am is gone."
She seems to debate this, but still doesn't say anything. Maybe she really doesn't know anything thought. Kye wouldn't have given her to us if she could give me information. That would just defeat the purpose wouldn't it?
"Your mark is still glowing Kat." Sam One points out.
I look down at it once before wrapping my arms protectively around m body. I don’t like thinking about it, especially with Nana standing right in front of me.
Nana itches at her neck when she sees my discomfort, and something catches my eye. A series of spirals and loops comes out from behind her ear and travels down the back of her neck. I gasp and take a step back away from her.
"You have a mark... just like me!" I gasp.
"That means you really do know something about dragons!" Rebecca yells earning her another slap up the side of the head.
"I know only what my mother told me, and it will do you no good." She says.
"Why not?" I ask.
"Because it is too dangerous. The longer you go without using your abilities the better. Eventually they will grow weaker and you won't have to use them. Dragons were hunted to near extinction because of what they could do. I don't want that to happen to you."
"So you knew all this time? That I was a dragon?" I demand.
"Of course, that's the reason your parents didn't want you. The dragon gene skips generations, and your mother wasn't a huge fan of giving birth to a mythical creature."
"You mean even she knew? Did my dad know? Did Papa know? Is there anyone who didn't know what I am?" My anger sparks. Everything I knew in my life was a lie.
