Minca and Nellie had met at a small Korean restaurant around the corner. The restaurant was filled with the sweet aroma of sliced onions and raw garlic kimchi. To the left of them, was a man cooking pork strips sizzling on a grill. A group of Korean ladies started dancing, wearing flamboyant Korean dance clothing, and holding bright blue fans, with gems glued on them. They began chanting something, and making their way around the restaurant. The waiter handed them soju shots, and a bowl of grilled gopchang. Minca looked around, overwhelmed by the burst of color, culture, and food she'd never tasted, or even seen before.
"So, are you from Korea," Minca smiled, poking at the grilled gopchang.
"Yes, I moved here about four years ago," she started. "I began my residency and internship here, and went to med school in Korea," she smiled, drinking the soju shot. "I lived almost my whole life in Korea," she smiled. "And I picked up English surprisingly well,"
"That's cool," Minca nodded, still confused by what gopchang was. "I'm from Israel," she smiled, sharing a bit about her culture.
"Oh Soo Yun, is this your date," her friend teased, handing her a bowl of soft tofu stew.
"Soo Yun?" Minca asked, raising her eyebrows.
"That's my Korean name, for simplicity, Americans call me Nellie," she explained. "Don't know why, but they do, so I just went along with it," she smiled. "People say I look like a Nellie," she continued. "I don't mind,"
"Nice to meet you," Nellie's friend politely greeted, giving a slight bow, and a wink. "My name is Soon-Bok," she smiled. "People just call me Soon-Bok," she continued, giving a gentle smile.
"Soon-Bok is my best friend, we've known each other since we were in diapers," Nellie laughed, giving Soon-Bok a hug. Minca gave a weak smile.
"And are you also gay..." she asked, as the response was a gay silence.
"Anyways, I'm sure you're wondering what gopchang is," Soon-Bok smiled, trying to switch topics. "It's basically just cow intestine chopped into rounded sections," she started. "And then we grill it, and it's very chewy, but not rubbery," she smiled. "It tastes great with the soju," she explained, pouring her another shot of soju.
"Anyways, nice meeting you," Minca smiled, as she took a shot of soju.
