Jason's POV
Leo and I sit in the car in silence, occupied by our thoughts. Our ride to Arcadia will take about 10 hours, so the silence is good for now... That is, until a startling thought comes to me. "Leo, what exactly is our plan here? We're going to find this sorceress and convince her to give us one of the most powerful staffs in the world? What happens next?"
Leo seems startled by my sudden doubts but shakes them off, "We're going to do whatever we have to do to get that staff, whatever it takes." The tone in his voice puts me on endge, but I shove those thoughts to the back of my mind. I miss Percy, I wish he were here with us. Maybe he'd help us come up with a plan. I should call him. I slip my phone out of my pocket and unlock it. I admire my wallpaper of Percy and I, gods I miss him so much. I dial his number and put the phone up to my ear.
"Hello?" Percy answers, his tone light. I smile brightly, glad to hear his voice.
"Hey Seaweed Brain, I miss you," I say, looking out the window. I see Leo roll his eyes, but he has a light smile on his face.
Percy chuckles on the other end, "I miss you too, babe. How's camp? Is everything going good?"
I frown slightly looking at Leo, "Yeah, camp is fine, I'm helping out a lot." Leo glaces over and winces. I can tell he feels guilty. "How's work, Mr. Marine Biologist?" I question, trying to change the subject.
Percy scoffs, "Work is work, it's hard to explain to my coworkers how I'm so good with the animals, but I'm managing."
I smile, imagining Percy explaining to one of his coworkers that a fish is lonely. "Hey, I gotta go, but I'll speak to you soon. I miss you and love you so much," I say, my heart aching.
I hear Percy sigh, "I love you too, don't get yourself killed Superman." I chuckle at this.
"I'll try not to," I say and then we say our goodbyes. When we hang up my heart feels heavy. Leo notices my dampened mood and nudges me.
"Look, I couldn't have done this without you, Jase. You're doing me a huge favor and I owe you one. I'll get you back to Percy, I promise," Leo says, determined. I can only nod and look out the window.
After a few more hours of traveling we pull over for the night at a sort of sketchy looking motel. Leo books us a room while I wait out by the car. Leo comes back looking somewhat frustrated. "They only had a room with one bed so looks like you and I are sharing." I laugh lightly and shrug. It could be worse. We make our way into our room and set our things down. "We should get some sleep, then in the morning we can grab breakfast, make a plan, and then get on the road," Leo says heading to the bathroom. I nod and start to change into my pajamas and taking off my glasses. I lay down and think of Percy, wishing he was the one laying next to me instead of Leo. I shouldn't of lied, he'll feel so betrayed if he finds out. With guilt coursing through me, I fall into a dreamless sleep.
I'm awoken by the sound of Leo rummaging through his bag. I sit up, quickly putting on my glasses. "What are you looking for?" I ask glaring slightly at Leo for waking me.
Leo reaches into his magic tool belt and finds what he was looking for. The old book from his house is held tightly in his hand. Leo grins, "I've been looking for this all morning, I thought I lost it. I'm glad I didn't, that would've made our quest a lot harder. Anyways, rise and shine Sparky, we have a busy day ahead of us." I admire Leo's positive attitude, I wish I felt the same. I still have some doubt's about how we're going to pull this off, but we'll figure it out as we go. Besides, how often do things actually go to plan?
We pile into the car and continue our journey to Arcadia. "What is this sorceress like?" I ask, attempting to formulate a plan.
Leo ponders for a moment, "I don't know a lot about her. I know that she's secluded, doesn't interact with many people. Luna said that we could trust her though. We just had to say we're friends of Luna's and hope she doesn't blow our heads off."
I frown slightly, "How are we going to convince her? She doesn't sound very empathetic."
Leo glances over at me smiling, "I tell her my sob story and hope she's kind enough to help. After all, I don't want the staff forever, just long enough to help Calypso." I nod, his reasoning sounds fair. Hopefully things go our way for once and the Fates don't have it out for us.
After about a five hour car ride we finally arrive in Arcadia, a small town on the coast of Oregon. We find a small hotel to rent a room, getting our own beds this time. It's dark by the time we're settled down and ready to get dinner. Leo and I set out to the diner we saw on our way to the hotel. We walk to the diner in comfortable silence, taking the town in. A few people roam down the sidewalks, enjoying the early September weather. I should bring Percy here, I feel like he'd like this place.
We arrive to the diner and find a booth to sit in. A middle-aged waitress takes our order and we begin setting up our plan. "Luna sent me the sorceress's address. She's close by, so we won't have to go far. Luna also gave me some information about her. Her name is Layla and she was best friends with Luna but Luna left her. So, she may be angry about that."
I sigh heavily, "That could be a problem, maybe we can reason with her. Luna must've had a good reason to leave." Leo nods and grows a smile as he notices our food coming.
We eat and discuss our plan in more detail. We'll go to Layla's house and try to negotiate. If that doesn't work, we use force. I didn't really agree with this plan, but it was the best thing we have right now. We finish our food and pay, our minds fried. We head back to the hotel in silence, our thoughts consuming us. I hope we can get the staff quickly, I really miss Percy and Calypso may not have long to live. We have to save her and I have to get back to the one I love. I will get back to him, I swear on the River Styx.
