Walking to the cafe in the summer was acceptable. You were able to enjoy a wonderful summer breeze and the smell of the neighborhood grills going. The birds would be chirping and the sun would be shinning down on our smiling faces.
However, walking to the cafe in the winter was a completely different story.
It was freezing. The cold, brisk air would push and pull at you as it struggled to rip apart even your most reliable coat.
The snow would come and go as it pleased, leaving behind a fresh coating of white snow and ice that would leave us slipping and sliding down the streets.
The streets would be empty most of the time. The frigid conditions confined most students to their dormitories on the weekdays and in the recreation centers during the weekend.
"What do I want?" Kitty could not seem to make up her mind as she looked over the cake choices that were displayed in front of her.
"You always get lemon anyway."
"Um, maybe I want something different today." Her eyes rolled; her lips poked out as she picked up the lemon frosted slice we both knew she would choose. "You don't know me."
She teased.
"I know enough."
"Hey Kitty?" A few passing girls waved at her.
"Hey." Kitty would respond nonchalantly.
"Hey Kitty."
A boy passed her by, his eyes drawn to hers.
"You never answered me about that study date." He winked before he licked his lips to exhibit interest and seduction I assumed.
"Hm I thought I did when I said fuck off Nick."
His lips poked out as he pouted.
"Oh girl, you just keep breaking my heart." He smiled; winking once more before he walked away.
Kitty got all of the attention.
What did I get?
Not even a second glance.
"He likes you?"
"Nope. His definition of a study date is fucking in the back of a library or something." Kitty chuckled. "Those jocks don't know what 'like' or 'dating' is."
She picked up her plates and proceeded to the counter to swipe for her meal.
"All those football, basketball, and soccer boys think about is getting their dicks hard and wet."
"Language Kitty." The cashier spoke.
"Sorry Ms. Maggie." Kitty smiled, offering Ms. Maggie a soft look that made her immediately forgive her favorite customer.
"They can't be all assholes." I bit down on my bottom lip as I followed Kitty out of the cafe.
"You are right. I can't say all. Maybe most." She clarified.
She couldn't say all.
And I was sort of hopeful that she didn't because that one jock, that one person I didn't want to call an asshole, was actually heading our way.
Him.
Monte Hamilton.
Every time I saw him, I still got that feeling from when I first laid eyes on him the first day of admission.
Those butterflies.
"Ladies." He greeted as he continued to walk toward the cafe.
"I hope you are ready for that football game on Friday." Kitty's head slightly turned as she hollered over her shoulder.
"You know it." He smiled so beautifully before he rushed into the cafe.
"He is all we got on that bum ass team." She mumbled as she rushed down the street to avoid the swirling wind and dropping temperature.
As Kitty continued to talk, I could not help but think about him. How he moved. The sound of his voice. How he captured the eyes of everyone without even doing anything special.
Monte Hamilton.
Star player who not only dominated the football field, but also the basketball courts as well.
He was multitalented and intellectual. A guy who I thought was beautiful all around.
"Did you hear me?"
"Huh?" Kitty turned around to look at me.
"Were you even listening?"
"Yeah, yeah." I lied.
"Mhm." Kitty pulled open the dormitory doors as I followed her into the warm building...
