"So how exactly do I know where to find my homeroom?" I ask my sister, jogging along side her to keep up her pace. She may be a girly girl, but damn she walks fast in heels. She laughs at me, as if I should know the answer.
"My poor, naive little sister... Welcome to public school, where we rely on maps and memorization to find where we're going. It'll all be in your student agenda. Since you're a junior, you will be staying in classes mostly in the blue wing. I'm going to be in the red wing. Inter grade areas like the gym, cafeteria and the auditorium will be on their own, not in any of the wings. There will be a map in the agenda of all the wings, separated, and you can find everything else I just mentioned in there as well. It should be easy." I try to remember everything Sadie has said, but it's hard to do so when I'm also trying to walk, look around, and get a feel for the campus.
"So, are there bathrooms in each wing?" Sadie nods.
"Definitely. And there are bathrooms in the gym, and cafe as well. If you ever don't know which wing you're in, the walls have colored stripes indicating the different wings," she points out as we step into the large building.
"Wow..." I gasp. It's even nicer on the inside. Of course it would be. Silly Noelle... why wouldn't it be? The front office is right there when we walk in. Sadie grabs my arm and tugs me along, dragging me inside.
"You wait here, while I go talk to Principal Morris. Don't touch anything, and please, don't break anything," she begs. I roll my eyes as she goes behind the counter. While she's gone, I take this opportunity to look around, through the office window. I see students buzzing around the hallways. Boys, girls, a few teachers; they all look like they know exactly where they're going. Surprisingly, I see one of my friends, Emily, through the glass. I wave to her, giving her a big smile. She sees me too, of course, and waves back, twice as excited as I am. She runs over to me, throws open the office door and wraps her arms around me in a hug.
"It's so good to see you! Oh my gosh, I bet you can't wait for your first day! Are you excited? Nervous?" I laugh, fixing my hair.
"A little bit of both, actually. Sadie is getting me settled, I guess, and then it's off to homeroom. Hey, maybe we'll be in some classes together," I say, hopefully.
"Oh, I hope so! Well, I gotta get going, but come find me at lunch! Or before then, if we have classes together. It was so good to see you before school actually started," she smiles, hugging me once more before leaving. I accept the hug, and wave her goodbye. After a few minutes of Sadie still being gone, I start to grow impatient. I had sat down after Emily left, but now stood, pacing around the office. Eventually, when I decided that she had been gone long enough for me to check on her, I spun around to go find her when I bumped into a tall stranger.
"Oh!" I exclaim, embarrassed. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry, I wasn't looking before I spun around like that." I look up into some of the most remarkable blue eyes I've ever seen, and completely forgot what I was even talking about. "I um..."
"No worries," he laughs. "It's my fault, anyway. I was actually going to ask you something, but when I startled you I forgot what I was going to say."
"Same here," I say, idiotically. Same here? Really? That's the best I could do? "I mean.. actually, I don't know what I mean." Nice one, Noelle. I made him smile, though. Isn't that a plus?
"It's cool. Anyway..." before he could continue his sentence, my sister chooses now to butt in.
"Noelle! I've gotten everything set up. You're in homeroom 207, blue wing. Here you go," she smiles, handing my my schedule and agenda. "We're already running behind, and you don't want to be late on the first day. Come on," she insists, grabbing my hand.
