Luke's Pov:
"Mum, mum!" I call, running inside, having just gotten home from school. My mother welcomes me home with open arms, a smile on her face, and a warm hug. "Guess what we did in school today?" I don't wait for her to guess. "We took a maths quiz and learned a bunch of stuff, but then we got to make mother's day presents for our mums! Mine's not finished yet, but I know you'll love it," I smile at her. She laughs, kissing me on the cheek.
"I'm sure I will, baby. Why don't you follow me into the kitchen? I may have made some snacks for you to try." I giggle, taking her hand and following her. When we get there, my mum has laid plates out on the table with cookies, tarts, homemade pretzels, and a bunch of other snacks. "I wasn't sure what you would be in the mood for," she tells me.
"That's okay," I say, hoping up into the chair. "I'll have one of everything!" My mother laughs at my enthusiasm, sitting down across from me.
"Well, then I will too," she smiles, picking up a cookie and biting into it. After we've finished our snacks, my mum helps me with my homework, we play together for a little bit, and then she has to go and pick up dinner. While she's gone, she calls for my god father, uncle Brody, to come watch me. He's not really my uncle, but that's what we call him. I get excited, because uncle Brody always likes to play with me, so I don't mind my mum leaving.
When Brody got here, I ran over to him, jumping on him. He laughs, picking me up. "Hey, squirt," he greets me, giving me a hug.
"I won't be long," my mother tells us. She leaves after giving me a kiss on the cheek and saying goodbye. While she's gone, uncle Brody and I play around, watch TV, and talk. When mum's been gone a long time, I start to get worried.
"Uncle Brody, where's mum? Why is it taking so long?" I ask. He shrugs.
"I don't know, boy. I'm sure she's fine." Just then, the phone rang, and uncle Brody went to fetch it. "Hello? Oh no..." he turns to me, his happy face in a frown. "I'm so sorry," he whispers to me. My eyes go wide, fear causing my entire body to tremble. I don't know whether to cry, scream, both, or neither. I just stand there, eyes wide, body stiff. It was like I was completely shut off, and I couldn't do anything.
There's no way that I'll ever be able to forget that day. My mother got into the biggest car accident of the year. It was a head on collision, the driver responsible was drunk, but there were two other cars in the mix up. The only one who survived was the one who caused it. Figures, doesn't it? It's always the disgusting asshole that takes lives that gets to keep theirs. That man took my mother away from me, when I was six years old. It was bad enough that my father had died when I was a baby, but my mother was all that I had left.
I had to fight everyone to stay in that house. Since I was under the legal custody of Brody after that, I was supposed to move in with him and my god mother, Meredith. But I couldn't; I couldn't lose all connections to my mother. I fought to stay in that house, but ever since I had, I wish that I never did. Brody ruined that house. He acts like it's his, and his only. It's not, though. It's mine. It's my house, and he needs to get the hell out. How dare he sleep in the room my mother used to sleep in? How dare he lay a hand on me or anyone else in this house? How dare he act like he's the only one that has a voice? Not anymore.
"Where are you taking me?" I ask, frightened out of my mind. "I didn't do anything wrong! I promise, he's lying! I didn't touch him!" The police officer grabs my arm and brings me out of the house. "I didn't touch him! He hit me!" I scream. No one's listening.
"Shh," he hushes me. "We're not saying you did, Luke. Your father called us because he's concerned that you're acting out because of your mother."
