"You're gonna show up late," Jess said sitting on my bed scrolling through her phone.

I had already gotten changed and we were now sitting around my room. It was currently 6:45pm.

"Uh, should I text him and tell him that I'm gonna be late?" I questioned.

"Not until he's been waiting for at least twenty minutes, and if he texts you, wait, does he have your number? When did you get his?"

"Yeah, you never told me you guys exchanged numbers," Hannah added.

"Uh, he gave me his yesterday but didn't ask for mine, nor did I give it to him. He was expecting me to text him yesterday but I didn't. I still haven't either."

"Okay, that's good. He can't text you asking where you are and he can't call or anything. He'll have to sit in the dark until you text him."

I nodded, not really understanding her play.

"So, why I do have to wait twenty minutes to text him?"

"Because, if he is still waiting after twenty minutes, it means he's serious. It means he's into you," Jess said, putting her phone down.

"Why do I want him interested again?"

Jess groaned in annoyance.

"Because, maybe eventually you guys will have a thing, and maybe that's what Justin isn't telling you. Maybe Monty likes you and Justin knows but since he knows Monty he doesn't want you to get hurt and maybe Monty doesn't even have intentions to hurt you."

"You really thought into this, huh?" Hannah said, turning to face Jess, an amused smile playing at her lips.

"Because maybe Monty could be Emmy's happiness," Jess said, looking over at me with what I thought to be pity.

"Jess-"

"No, I'm not pitying you, I just want to see you actually happy. Like how you were when you would talk about Jeff. Now it just always looks like you're faking." Jess said, the look of sadness never leaving her face.

I looked down, not saying anything as I picked at my nails.

"What have you eaten today Em?" Hannah asked a couple minutes later.

"What?" Jess and I asked at the same time.

"What. Have. You. Eaten. Today?"

I opened and closed my mouth, trying to find words.

"What do you mean? She eats, right Em?" Jess asked, looking at me.

I sat there, gaping at the two of them, my mind going blank, unable to think of an excuse.

"I-I."

"Oh my god, Emily, are you starving yourself?" Jess asked incredulously.

"I-I just," I stuttered, I wasn't used to be put on the spot like that.

"She has been for a while. I noticed it at school. When she just stopped eating lunch. Then I stayed over one night and her mom had made dinner, but she didn't eat then either. I talked to her about it and she promised me that she would do better and eat more. Obviously she lied." Hannah said, looking angry.

"Em, why? You're not fat, you never have been."

"I don't know, I just, I don't want to eat," I said, my eyes glistening with tears.

"Is that why that movie about the girl struggling with anorexia is your favorite? Because you're struggling? If you know you're struggling, if you know you're hurting yourself, why don't you go and get help?" Hannah said, her voice raising.
