I found this story when searching up scary roads that are haunted at night. This is by far one of my three favorite haunted roads. Lets get to it!

There is a story known as The Vanishing Girl. The story begins with a man by the name of Dr. Eckersall, who was driving home late one night. He had left a country- club dance on a Saturday when it is said he spotted a lovely girl near the intersection. She was dressed in the sheerest of evening gowns, calling him over and asking him for a lift.

Not thinking he slammed on his brakes, and told her to get in the back seat of the roadster. The front passenger seat was packed with golf clubs and bags he stated to the young woman. What on Earth is a youngster like you doing out here all alone at this time of night? He asked shifting to look at her. It is too long of a story to tell you now she explained. The girls voice was was soothing and sweet- like a cup of tea on a cold night. Begging the man Please, please take me home. I will explain everything to you there

The woman informed him The house was located __ North Charles Street (not shown because of personal reasons). I do hope it is not too far out of your way. Dr. Eckersall made a grunting noise, returning the car in motion. The man drove quickly and quietly to the house. Not thinking about looking in the rearview mirror. Once he got to the old, closed up house, he proudly said under his breath Here we are as if he was the hero of the day.

He then turned around in shock as he noticed the back seat was empty. What the hell He explained with fright in his words. For some time he tried to loop it in his head how she could have gotten out. The girl couldnt possible have fallen from the car without him noticing it. Nor could she has simply disappeared.

Getting out of the car he finally got himself to go up to the door and ring it. Confused and wanting answers he patiently waited for about 2 minutes. The door finally opened. A grey- haired and very tired looking man looked out at Eckersall. I cant tell you what an amazing thing has happened he started to try and explain as to be interrupted by the man. Yes, yes, I know, The older man said rubbing his temple as if tired of hearing this again. This has been happening several other Saturday afternoons in the past month. That young girl that you have met, sir, is my daughter. She was killed in a auto accident at the intersect where I believe you have seen her about 2 years ago. Both of they grew quiet with this sentence.

According to folklorist Jan Brunvand, the legend of the vanishing hitchhiker evolved from earlier European stories, usually about travelers on horseback. In Hawaii, the hitchhiker became associated with the ancient volcano goddess Pele.

SIGHTINGS:   Vanishing hitchhikers appear in numerous songs and in the 1951 Orson Welles short film Return to Glennascaul, the 1985 movie Mr. Wrong, and the 1824 Washington Irving novel The Lady With The Velvet Collar.
