Ch. 5 The Dead Children's Playground

In the past years there have been various reports of sightings in the graveyard of Drost Park in Huntsville, Alabama. It is said that it could be the world's greatest unfortunately-sighted park. For some people would know its nickname as the Dead Childrens Playground. The park is located in a secret spot right in the middle of a one-hundred-acre Maple Hill Cemetery. Yeah that is right, it is haunted. Maple Hill Cemetery in is Alabama's largest cemetery and was founded way back in 1822.

Well in a park space adjoining Alabamas Maple Hill Cemetery, the largest and oldest in the state, there is a small playground where kid can have a place to release their energy. Of course this cemetery playground sees more ghost hunters and teenagers than bored children. The small array of simple playground equipment includes swings, and a modern jungle gym. It is set in a low spot of the graveyard and surrounded by rocks and trees on three sides, making it all the more claustrophobic. When the sun goes down it is said by multiple paranormal investigators that the children come out and play as it is not to hot for their souls. Legends say that during the years 1960-1962, the area that I around Huntsville was handled by a terrible amount of child abductors that hurt the city. Sadly to say most of the children that were abducted were soon found out to be killed by the grips of their captors.

The bodies of the children were found around were the playground now sits today. Investigators who would sneak in at night would report the swings moving by themselves as well as hearing the children's voices singing and a couple times calling out the people who were there at the time. The people inside and out of the city were so found of the little haunted playground that in 2007, when the city took everything away. Much of this phenomenon occurs between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., far too late for any live child to be out playing. The most eerie of reports is the common occurrence of swings moving rhythmically and in sync by themselves, even when the swings have just been brought to a complete stop.

Admittedly beautiful during the day, when dusk falls, the atmosphere changes into something quite sinister. Some say that the spirits of the dead children come to the playground to play. The citizens of Huntsville are so fond of the little haunted playground that in 2007, when the city removed the slides and swing sets to make more room of the cemetery, the public outcry caused the city to not only put the playground back, but to replace all of the equipment with brand new installations. It seems that The Dead Childrens Playground isnt going anywhere, and seeing as the paranormal activity has only increased in the past few years, its safe to say that the spirits haunting the park are just as glad to have the space as the living.
