Sounds of beeping cars and the sirens of ambulances were all she could hear while running in the streets of downtown Springfield. Her heart was beating fast and she could feel it pound in her skin. Even if it was a cold raining Saturday evening, she was sweating all over and trembling in fear.
A shadow was following her and she felt her life could be in danger.
She turned right and bumped into someone and slipped. When she came around, she could see blood coming out of her knees, blending with the water in the puddle. Her peripherals sensed the shadow was getting close and could feel it coming for the kill. She stood up and ran even if she was in a lot of pain.
She looked up and saw glimmering lights from the towering buildings. "I'm almost there. I could get help. I need to get to him." She thought to herself. She couldn't care less with her clothes that were already damped with mud. Her breathing was getting quicker and her stamina was running low but she couldn't stop or else it will catch her.
She got caught into an intersection and there were swarms of people walking and passing through. Cars were also filling up the space because of a road construction she's seeing to her right.
She was catching her breath.
She's in panic.
She was stuck.
As she turned, she saw the shadow smiling at her. She stood there for a moment, terrified with the shadow. She couldn't see its face.
She suddenly got into a trance, "If I die... No, no. I've got to get to him. Patrick needs to know I'm already being followed." She snapped and ran into the alley. The alley was getting darker as she was getting farther from the main road. She noticed the alley getting tighter. It's getting harder to breathe.
Dead end.
She turned around. The shadow was there, smiling. That smile where you know it knows you lost hope and you've got nowhere to go. She couldn't move a muscle and stood still. She was in shock. All she could hear was her heartbeat. She felt the sweat from her forehead crawling down to her jaw.
The shadow came to her real fast.
"Emma." Emma opened her eyes.
"Emma, time for breakfast." A man knocked on the open bedroom door. "You'll be late for your first day in internship." "Hmmm. Yes dad. Be right ahead." Emma smiling to Doug. Doug Frasier is a biologist for a prominent scientific explorations program specializing in human neuro-capabilities in Geneva. He is a tall man in his mid-50's and has one of those French wavy coiff and was white all over. His defined jaw line and tan color compliments his blue eyes and a nose where Emma got it from.
"Come down to the kitchen when you're ready, ok honey?" Doug said as he wore his glasses and turned for the stairs. He's wearing his usual blue pajamas and robe while making grilled cheese sandwiches for the two of them. He was quite the expert in flipping breads in the pan since he's been doing this since Emma was 6. It was her favorite. It's been Emma's staple for breakfast and could not start her day without it.
While staring at the tars of the bread in the pan, he had a glimpse of his younger years and how he had Emma come into his life.
He and his wife, Charlotte had Emma when he was still 33 in his Ph.D. It's been really difficult for him since he was juggling his career, education and family life at that time for him to provide for himself and the women in her life. He would spend nights finishing his paper on the Biological and Anatomical Effects on Optimum Human Brain Usage. Emma would suddenly show up in front of him to bug him in making grilled cheese.
He was reading the newspaper when he came across a report of a teenage girl murdered on Saturday evening. The girl's upper nape was sliced open and was found in an alley in downtown Springfield. "What time will you be flying to Geneva again, dad?" "Dad?" Emma wondering why her dad's spaced out. "What's in the news right now, dad?" Waving her hand at her dad's face.
