Zelda

I sat on the table finishing the last bite of my burger when my mom and dad walked into the kitchen.

"Are you sure you want to stay here all by yourself?" My dad asked, but what he really meant was 'change your mind and come with us'.

"Yes, besides all my things are already here and I want to unpack and start setting things up before I start school. What time are you leaving?"

"Well, I don't understand why you can't do that later. You still have four days." My dad leaned across the table and grabbed an apple from the basket of fruit one of the neighbors brought.

“Whoa these are juicy. That was nice of her to bring us fruit. Where does she live again?” My dad asked my mom.

“Next door. She said her name was Kathy, I forgot her last name. She has Seven kids.”

“Someone was busy.” I said causing my dad to laugh. My mom was holding it back but I could tell she was growing weak.

“Not like that Zee! Only three are her own. She was a foster parent and then decided to adopt the kids. She said she got most of them at a young age so she considers them her own.”

“Any Zelda’s age?” My dad asked.

“As a matter of fact yes. Her youngest are in high school. A girl and a boy. She has two boys in college and apparently they are very smart because they received a bunch of grants and scholarships.” My mom looked and me and hinted at something.

She continued, “She has three older daughters, triplets of her own. I think she said they were twenty-five but I'm not sure. She’s pretty young herself. Not more than Forty-five I think.

“Sounds fun, but you still didn’t answer me. What time are you leaving?”

"I am waiting for the alarm system to be installed. They said they would be here within the next hour. After that I think your mom wants to make sure you have food to eat."

"What time will you guys be back tomorrow?" I asked.

"No later than noon. We are waking up early and packing the last few things up then coming straight home." My mom answered me.

"I don't want you guys driving too late. Just leave me some money and I'll get a pizza tonight and in the morning i'll go out and buy some pancake mix and a few eggs. It'll save you guys two hours. You know how long mom takes at the store."

"Right here darling, not deaf." mom said.

"I know mom, but admit it. Your store trips take two hours tops no matter how little you're getting." I walked over to my mom and kissed her forehead. "No offense mom."

"She does have a point." My dad added.

"You don't know where anything is at Zee. How are you going to find food?" She asked.

"ohh mother, you underestimate me, or any other teeneager. I'll just GPS a place. Or I could have it delivered. Is the wifi up and running yet?"

"Almost, its already programmed. You just have to find an ethernet plug to plug the box in."My dad answered.

My parents left as soon as the alarm system was installed. I went upstairs to finish unpacking the simple things. I finished making my bed and put some clothes away. I heard my phone go off but I couldn't find it in the mess of boxes and clothes on my bed. It went off a second time and this time I found it on my pillow. It was Destine.

"You have reached Zelda, unfortunately she doesn't give a fuck right now so you might want to try and call back later."

"Wahoo! She lives! Good to hear your sarcasm is still intact." We both started laughing.

"How can I help you my beautiful sweet side hoe."

"You said you would call when you were there."

"Oh crap! I am sorry I totally forgot. I haven't even called Matt yet."

"Well I just saw your parents car pass by my house and I didn't see you with them."

"Ya we took both cars and they went back to get the rest of our things in the truck and I stayed here."

"Brave." She said.

"Fuck! That means it's like already eight."

"Seven forty-three to be exact."

I walked down stairs while talking to Destine.

"Have you seen Matt?" I asked.

"No, haven't seen or heard from him since the party Saturday night."

"That was four days ago. He was supposed to come by my house this morning. We were going to have a special goodbye breakfast just the two of us. He canceled and said his car wasn't working."

"Well, I don't have time to keep track of your man for you." She said.

"He's not my man, not anymore at least."

All the memories started coming back. I loved Matt. He was the first person to ever notice me and make me feel important. We were going on four years when we decided we would split while I moved. We decided to start talking as if it were at the beginning. We did not want the other one to feel committed when we were so far away. I never had much faith in long distance relationships.

"So you guys did try the break thing huh?"

"Ya, I just didn't want him to feel insecure, besides he;s a good person and he deserves to be with someone who is right by his side and not three hours away."

"Zee, I keep thinking there is a bigger reason why you broke it off, is there something you're not telling me?"

I couldn't repeat it. Destine was right, there was a bigger reason and I hated myself for it. Matt knew and stood by my side despite what happened. I did not want anyone else coming into our business. Destine is my best friend but I wasn't ready to share this with anybody else.

Hey guys. I want to say thank you for reading my story and I would love it if I could get some feed back. I am writing for a summer project and I decided to go all out. I love the way this is going so far and I might end up doing a whole story. I know there are only a few people reading but I really appreciate that. Thank you so much!

-Much love
