He never meant for it to happen.
Falling for you.
He'd never even liked speaking to you that much, he was always plagued by himself and all the events in his life that made him feel so broken inside.
After he'd finally tried to figure himself out, he somehow ended up confiding in you of all people about his old crush on Percy and how it still bothered him that he'd never told him.
You helped him you were nice and loving almost in a sibling kind of way but he couldn't bring himself to see you that way as easily as many others probably could.
He learned to like you, tolerate you more likely but he could still somewhat enjoy you're presence it was comforting at times just to know you were there, you understood he didn't like to talk much so you didn't try to blabber on but didn't leave him to himself either.
At first when he liked you he was confused, he thought it was just a random thought a feeling that would quickly fade a denial he'd put up before. He felt so weird, he resented you for some time not understanding how he could have his feelings for Percy like he did and now you it just made him feel even more freakish.
You didn't understand for a time, he felt pangs of guilt when he sent you away time and time again but just having your smile bring all these fuzzy sickening feelings to him was just too much.
Nico told Hazel of his troubles, she was such a good sister he just felt his problems wash away as she hugged him and helped him sort out his own feelings.
Then everything went completely wrong.
An attack came upon the ship, you tried your best to fend off the creatures but you'd never been the best fighter on the Argo II.
Nobody expected you to fall, you were pushed off the side of the ship and you were falling fast, Jason tried to get to you but by the time he was able to even look over the side of the ship you were out of sight Nicos sense told him sometime later you were gone but he refused it thinking maybe once he could be wrong.
Nico didn't remember the rest of the day really, it was mostly a blur of tears and hiding and screaming in anger trying to find someone to blame but there was no one.
He first thought you'd come back, there was no telling of the ways you could have survived you were a demigod after all.
Nicos thoughts got the best of him one day.
The young son of hades preformed a ritual that had become routine for him, he begged in the back of his mind that he'd sensed wrong that day, that your soul was still within you and you were out there somewhere.
Nico broke out in hot tears seeing your wispy figure take shape.
You said hello, it chimed sweetly in his ears he wished he'd appreciated how happily you'd always greeted him, he wished he hadn't pushed you away.
He cried and apologized and begged for forgiveness that you didn't even know he'd wanted, you tried to calm him down but he fell on his backside raking his fingers through his knotted hair and sobbing.
You'd always remembered Nicos eyes as dark with rings of exhaustion around his them, they looked ten times worse and were now puffy and bloodshot, it ached you to the core that you'd been so weak and had added yourself to his list of tragedies.
Your voice rung in his ears as you apologized, he looked up at you sniffling as you apologized again and again throwing your hands on your vapor like face.
Nico stood still slightly hiccuping, he decided to stop crying and say his goodbyes.
He told you, he told you everything he'd been wanting to say for some time and tried his best to stay calm for you and let his words sink in.
You wrapped your arms around him, they phased straight through but he still attempted to do the same his hands clamping on his own shoulders as you told him you'd been wanting him to say such things since forever.
You placed a non existent kiss on his lips as you faded away, He didn't mean to fall in love with you.
But he didn't dare regret it.
