Pentech Industries called home the biggest skyscraper in the city. It was the biggest company in Maryvale, and had its offices in a building that matched its status. Glass covered most of the building, and to look at its top would be to voluntarily strain your neck.
I entered the building determinedly, walking as fast as I could. I entered the foyer and immediately made my way to the receptionist desk. The woman there was on the phone, scribbling something on a piece of paper. I waited until she finished talking, and flashed my pearly whites at her.
"Jake White", she said as a matter of fact.
"In the flesh. How are you?" I asked.
I was supposed to know her name, but admittedly I had forgotten. I had come there numerous times, most of the times I was summoned after supposedly doing something wrong. I had met the woman and introduced to her by my dad's personal assistant.
"I'm good. Slaving away. Are you here to see your father?" she asked.
"Yeah...but he doesn't know I'm here. It's sort of an emergency", I said.
"He is really busy, maybe you can come during lunch?" she said softly.
"It can't wait", she said.
"Okay, wait here. I'll call him and...." She said and I interrupted.
"Don't call him", I said.
"But..." she said.
I flashed my pearly whites. "Please?"
She smiled at me. "Okay. But if he asks, we didn't talk".
"Thanks", I said making my way to the elevators.
Dad's office was near the top of the building, one floor from the roof. He was after all the master. I always wondered what would happen if all the elevators stopped working. At times I'd wished they did. He would probably fire even people whose jobs had nothing to do with the elevators.
I knew some of the employees felt the way I felt about him. He was a slave driver and never really praised anyone for a job well done. But some admired him too. He had an eye for business, was smart and humble.
After getting out of the elevators, I made my way down the carpeted walls towards his office. It was cold up here and eerily quiet. I hummed as I walked. My dad's senses had probably picked that I was on the way and he was ready for me. It was hard not to hear an external noise when everything was that quiet.
I got to the door and read another of Richard Branson's quotes.
You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.
Richard Branson
I took a deep breath and knocked.
"Come in", the voice was low.
I opened the door slowly and walked in. Dad was looking at some document on his desk. His office looked just as I remembered it, large with an amazing view of the city, neat and smelled like new books.
"30% Watson. 30 freaking percent. I could give every single employee in here a 20% freaking bonus, but..." dad said and looked up. "Oh, it's you".
I walked to his desk silently.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, frowning.
I sat on the chair facing him. "I want to know something".
"You have a knack for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. This couldn't wait until I came home?"
I shook my head. "Dad, what did you do to make Chris break up with me?"
