Tyler didn't part with his car. He ended up coming with. It was fun ingredient shopping with them. That was until they started asking me questions about where I was the whole day. I said the park, even though I hadn't seen a park anywhere close yet. I couldn't tell them about Adriana. Eli thought she'd been a one-night-stand when he'd seen her that morning. Tyler hadn't seen her at all. It was all good. After all, I had forbidden Tyler from hooking up with her and once he found out I was seeing her behind his back, he would be angry.
I ended up buying more ingredients than what I'd intended on doing. Tyler asked to be included. He knew what Martha's tortellini pasta salad tasted like and he wasn't about to miss out. She didn't go the ordinary route of butter, tortellini, herbs, parmesan and black pepper. She took it up a notch. I just liked the fact that it was easy and didn't take much time to prepare.
When we got back, I set off to work in the communal kitchen. Eli helped with the slicing of the ingredients. We were done in 20 minutes. We dished up and sat in our room with Tyler. Tyler's roommate still hadn't pitched up. Tyler liked talking so much he didn't enjoy his own company.
"This is definitely unique", Eli said looking at his plate.
I handed him a fork and we watched the TV. It was good having people around me. The guilt I had felt earlier that night was just a memory.
"Mmmm, this is surprisingly good", Eli said.
"We told you so", Tyler said.
"The trick is the goat cheese. When it melts you can barely taste the vinaigrette"
Eli and Tyler looked at me simultaneously.
"What?"
"What has Martha done to you?" Tyler asked, shock in his voice.
"Prepared me for the future", I said chuckling slightly.
"Bless her. At least there's one thing she can do well. She taught you well. We are definitely going to be buddies for life with these cooking skills", Tyler said.
I chuckled.
"Who's Martha?" Eli asked. I had forgotten that he wasn't my childhood friend. It felt like he knew a lot about me already.
"His nanny!" Tyler jumped in before I could say anything.
I punched Tyler and he almost dropped his plate. If he'd had, I would never hear the end of it.
"She was my nanny. Now she's the cook, maid and second mother", I said.
"Oh he's lying! She's still his nanny", Tyler said. I made to punch him again when my phone rang. I was surprised when I saw the caller id. I answered it.
"Hi dad", I said.
"Hello son. How is Stanton?"
"It is fine", I said coolly.
"You haven't called since you got there. Let's not forget who's paying".
"I'm sorry dad. I have been busy".
I heard scribbling. I put my plate on my desk, stood up and went to the window.
"Busy doing what? I know your classes only start tomorrow".
I sighed inaudibly. My dad wouldn't be caught dead at any of my football games but he was the first person to look at my report card. He was only interested in one part of my life.
"Busy with...uh, getting things ready", I said. What was I saying?
"Things like? Was partying up a storm part of it?"
