Jake's POV
The next morning I woke up to the nurse's irritating voice. She was mumbling to herself about rich kids and spoilt brats while writing something on a piece of paper. I squinted, sitting upright. The light in the room was unusually too bright.
"Hi", I said yawning.
"Hi", she said nonchalantly. Her tone told me she wasn't in the mood to exchange thoughts about the weather so I got the hint to stop talking.
My eyes focused on her pen, which she was using to write whatever it is she was writing. Realizing I was looking at her, she put the clipboard upright, preventing me from seeing what she was writing, not that I would at that distance.
I rolled my eyes and looked the other way, my eyes landing upon the water dispenser that was sitting across the room.
"Can I have some water?" I asked.
She frowned at me.
"Don't worry, I'll get it", I said making to get off the bed.
At that moment Tyler walked into the room. He was clearly in a good mood. He had a spring in his step and his cold seemed to be a thing of the past.
"Hey hey, stay where you are!" he ordered me, taking me by surprise. "Are you really going to let the patient get his own water?" he reprimanded the nurse, shaking his head at her.
"He can walk", the nurse said walking out.
"We are getting her fired!" Tyler said getting me some water.
I took the glass from him and drank. "What's up buddy?"
"Are you trying to kill yourself?" he yelled at me.
My eyes got rounder. "She's right! I can walk, heck I could run out of here if I wanted", I said.
"That's not what I meant! I've always known you are a bad driver, but this?" he said.
I threw my pillow at him.
"Say that one more time", I warned.
He walked to the window, looked down and then turned to stare at me.
"When did you leave Stanton? Are you here alone?" I asked.
"...A couple of hours ago. Yeah, I woke up in the morning for you, so you owe me. Your dad tasked me with picking you up".
"He owes you, not me", I said.
"Whatever. So seeing as you were on your way to Stanton, have you talked to Chris?" he asked.
I sighed inaudibly. I had been putting off talking about Chris, knowing my friends would want to know what had happened. I had no idea what had happened. I'd been happy to see him in my room the previous day. But then I'd seen his boyfriend in the corridor through a small part where the nurse hadn't properly closed the curtain. From then on words just spewed out of me like they weren't even mine.
The way he completed my sentences told me it was what he wanted so I couldn't back down. I said things I didn't mean only because it was things he wanted to hear. But it didn't matter anymore; we had closed that chapter of our lives. It had been a wonderful relationship, which had ended under dire circumstances.
"Yeah", I said curtly.
"And...?" Tyler said impatiently.
"And nothing Ty. What we had is over. It has been over for a long time", I said wearily.
"You have got to be kidding me. You came all this way to..." Tyler said but I interrupted.
"He has a boyfriend Ty! He's moved on!" I yelled.
