Seconds went by. Every second he didn't answer I felt like time was moving away slowly, the earth had suddenly decreased its speed of rotation, waiting for Chris's answer. But it had only slowed down in my eyes. The world didn't care. People were going on with their routines at that time, unfazed by an occurrence that was of no importance to them. Whatever answer Chris gave wasn't going to change their lives.
Yet it had the power to. No man was an island. We interacted with others around us every day, subtly influencing each other's daily rituals, our months, our years...our lives. So maybe everyone was supposed to wait with bated breath for Chris's answer just as I was. His answer could make me commit murder, crash a car, commit suicide, decide to be celibate, get married the next day, go kill a couple of dogs, solicit a prostitute and lots more. I wasn't thinking of doing any of that, but whatever I did would affect not just my life.
"I honestly don't know Jake. But I love you and I want to fix this. I only said we couldn't because that is what you wanted", he said finally.
"See? We always have wrong expectations. I said we couldn't because I thought that was what you wanted. When you agreed with me it broke my heart", I said.
"So can we fix it?" he asked slowly.
I smiled. "We can try".
He nodded.
"I suppose we can start with when everything changed, when you broke up with me. What happened?"
He licked his lower lip before saying, "Your dad offered to pay for my studies if I broke up with you. I said no. But then he got into my head about how unfaithful you were. He showed me pictures; he told me you'd cheated on me the night you came back. I took the money, but it wasn't because of what he'd asked me to do, it was because I felt like I had just been an experiment to you".
I put my face in my hands, sighing audibly. Removing my head, I extended my hand to his, toughing him only slightly.
"Chris, you were never an experiment to me. Yeah, it was all new, in more ways than one. When I made that choice to be with you, I didn't want experience, I wanted you. I know we got together under unusual circumstances, but love is supposed to be spontaneous, isn't it?" I said. "Cheating on you was never planned. It was something I did that I regret with my whole heart. It was a kiss, just one kiss. That doesn't excuse that it was wrong though. It was wrong of me. I betrayed your love and I'm truly sorry".
"You said it was all because of the money. You said I was a gold-digger", he said slowly.
"When you didn't tell me...When you didn't answer your phone I thought the worst. Every girl who'd been with me had been with me for my money or my popularity. I'm not used to love or being loved. You should have told me your reason", I said.
"I know", he said. "I tried to sometime later, but when I called some girl answered. You've moved on and I didn't see why I should drag the past to you. I couldn't take rejection a second time", he said. "When she called and said you guys were getting married and having a baby, that was the last straw".
My eyes widened. "She did what?"
"She called me and said she was having your baby. She said it was better for me to move on since you had too", he said. "Speaking of which, are you really having a baby?"
"When you suddenly broke up with me I was heartbroken. I sought relief from my heartbreak. I met Adriana and I just completely lost sense of who I was anymore. I tried to forget about you by having a fling with her. But I wasn't having fun and I knew why. I was going to call off things with her but she claimed that she was pregnant. Her dad wanted me to marry her. But as it turns out, she's not pregnant. She lied so she could get married to me".
