Noelle

Love is sometimes in the form of friendship.

+++

It was the first school dance. The one that all the couples went to together to show their love for each other, they'd slow dance to all the songs, they'd even manage to some how slow dance to the Harlem Shake. And guess who Noah was going with? Ashley. He was going with freaking Ashley. In the middle of orchestra I almost burst out crying at the thought that we were never going to be together. School dances were probably going to be the most depressing and dramatic times for me.

After school, but before the dance, Ash, Maddy, and I were getting ready at Maddy's house because she lived within walking distance of the school. Maddy was going with this guy named Nate who I had met once or twice. He seemed like a nice guy.

"So, Noelle, who are you going with?" Maddy asked once we started walking to school.

I fumbled with the sequins on my dress as I answered, "Augustus Waters. We don't care that our relationship is illegal because I'm twelve and he's seventeen, we're so in love that age doesn't matter."

"Oh." Maddy sighed pityingly. Ashley whispered something in her ear and she smiled brightly.

I knew Ashley was up to no good, I just didn't know exactly what she was scheming until I got to the dance.

"So," Ashley spoke as she guided me into the gymnasium, "I know how upset you've been lately over being single and I know someone who like-likes you and you guys would be the PERFECT match."

I started to shake my head 'no', knowing that this could only end badly. And then I saw him, it was Parker, who had finally grown into his height -he was no longer skin and bones, holding a single white rose. One might say he looked cute. But it was Parker, I liked him as a friend; nothing more.

"Ash. How thick is your skull? I'm not dating anyone because the person I like is dating someone that is not me. Someone I care about VERY dearly. Someone that I would never hurt the way that someone just hurt me." The words slipped out before I could stop them. Oh, shit, I thought.

"Noelle. No. Oh, no. Not him. Please say its not-" I ran out before she could finish and I kept running until I reached the girl's bathroom, where I locked myself into a stall and cried.

Someone knocked on the stall door after I'd been in there for ten minutes. By the mud-covered rainbow converse, I could tell it was Julia.

"The other ones open." I sniffled.

"I didn't come in here to utilize the toilet or cry or....whatever. I came in here because I know those bitches humiliated you. And I'm sorry about that....okay?"

I unlocked the door and came out of the stall.

"They were being bitches, weren't they." I mused and we talked until the party was over and I called my parents to pick me up.
