It's (Not) A Game

The rest of the night was spent with Jasper and I avoiding each other and my mom ordering me what to do and who to talk to.

I spent Saturday and Sunday questioning myself and taking long ass showers to think about everything has happened. By the time it was Monday my skin was dried out and I had to put on so much lotion that smelled like a baby.

"Why you smell like a baby Bone?" Trick says when I walk into school.

I scowl at him, "Not in the mood today Trick." I walk past him to my locker to grab my bookbag. I leave it here over the weekends because I told those teachers I wasn't doing homework over the weekend.

"Oh so now you're a cry baby," he smirked mischievously.

I glare at him, then roll my eyes and slam my locker door closed, "Piss off."

He puts his hands in the air, no longer smiling, and walks away with a indifferent look on his face. I notice his pants are lower on his hips than usual. I frown, h- he just needs a belt.

I sigh as I walk to my first class, the one I have with Troy. I slip in beside him, ready to sleep through Chemistry and hope Troy doesn't notice my attitude.

"Dude what's up? Stk said Trick told him you didn't seem okay."

"It's fine," I snap, then internally curse myself. "I- I'm fine, everything's fine it's just," I think of something he wouldn't question, "I just miss my dad...." I trailed.

He smiled half-heartedly and patted me on my back.

Jasper was in two of my classes, which just ruined my mood more. He didn't even acknowledge my presence and instead listened intently to the teacher.

But I couldn't stop staring at him. The gay boy, known by all the school, I've known of him all my life but the moment I talk to him he's locked under my skin.

Sixth period; Chemistry, I was sat behind Jasper with a partner. I wasn't really paying attention to what we were doing, I was kind of letting the guy beside me mess with whatever it was we were doing.

I'm not gonna lie, I couldn't focus, and it was because of him. Every few minutes he would lift his shirt, playing it off as adjusting it maybe, but I knew it was to fuck with my head. I mean how many times a day do you have to fix your shirt?

"So, what is it we're doing?" I say, loudly enough for Jasper to hear. He's sitting sideways on his stool, so I catch him rolling his eyes.

"Oh, uh, we're trying to record the chemical reactions between-"

"Okay, so it's not so easy right? Because sometimes you can't put two and two together, 'cause it might explode right?" I stare Jasper down, I can see a tic form in his jaw.

Jasper and his partner go quiet, and so does the table to our left. For a minute no one says anything, "Um, well, yeah but-"

"Dude shut up... Fuck this." I stand up quickly and walk out of the classroom.

"Luca-" I slam the door shut and head down the stairs, practically sprinting out of the school before someone calls my name.

"Bone! Bone!" It's the annoying sweet song voice again. Reegan, "Hey there. Aren't you doing the play?"

I try hard to hide my scoff before turning around, "Behind the curtain, yes."

Her smile faded, slightly, before turning 100% again, "Well that's just great. That means we will be working together."

"Hardly," I mumble.

"What was that?" She steps forward.

"Myers!" The theater teacher, Mr. Miller, barges out of the theater looking stressed and annoyed. He looks our way and takes a double take," Ms. Myers! What are you doing? You are my Juliet so get your butt in here."

"I'm sorry Mr. Miller it's just we're missing one of our backstage helpers," she gestures to me.

He gives me a once over, his face pinched up in disgust, "Mr. Jensen," he grimaces, "Get to the back so my Juliet will stop worrying about you. And you- Ms. Myers, get on stage!"

Mr. Miller heads inside and Reegan turns back to me squealing, "Oh I'm so excited, aren't you?"

I already have a headache, and I can feel my veins wanting to pop, "Sure."

Mr. Miller pokes his head back out, "Now! Myers!"

Reegan jumps and tells me to follow her. We walk into the theater, which is huge and is set up with Mercutio's death scene. (Trust me, the only thing I paid attention to in my classes is R+J).

"Mr. Jensen you can start out by pulling down the backdrop, so I don't have to do it myself." Mr. Miller rushes to center stage, calling on all the characters needed for this act.

"Uh, Mr. Miller," I raise my hand.

Smart, you're not in class.

He looks at me and I take that as a 'what', "Don't you have other backstage crew members?"

"None have signed up yet- in fact," he drags out, "I don't recall seeing your name either."

"Uh, actually, I just signed up."

"Oh, fabulous," he draws sarcastically.

I walk to the back and look around for anything that says backdrop. Finally I spot a piece of paper on a level that reads A. III S. I . I pull it and listen for any warning signs that I did something wrong.

I walk back out to the stage, "Jensen! You're a natural. Too bad you'll be competing." He smirks mischievously.

"With you," I reach up to hold onto my backpack strap.

Mr. Miller points over to seats of the theater, "Mr. Fuentes himself." I look over to where Mr. Miller is pointing. Right at Jasper.

"Are you fucking kidding me!"

"Mr. Jensen!" Mr. Miller glares at me.

"Sorry Mr. Miller, I just remembered that I have a, uh, appointment with my parents about our dog. Dog training, yeah, dog training. I'll be back here tomorrow 7 period, promise Mr. Miller."

I dash off stage and head for the theater doors, trying not to listen in on Mr. Miller's complaints of already losing a crew member before being grasped in Jasper's hold tightly. My arm aches as he holds me closer, his mouth next to my ear, "Stop running Lucas. You can't run and play games, you'll trip on the cord."

He shoves me away and I stare him down before storming off to my car.
