Anne's POV
I stared at my appearance in the mirror and ran my fingers through my short hair. Of all days for Gilbert Blythe to come back, he just had to witness the horrendous mishap called my hair. I sighed and admired the dress Miss Jeannie gave me. Hopefully it would draw Gilbert's - um, well, everyone's attention away from my hair.
Making my way down the stairs, I could hear Marilla and Matthew talking to who I assumed was Sebastian and Gilbert. I took a deep breath and walked down the hall to meet eyes with everyone else sitting in the parlor room. Gilbert smiled when he saw me and got up from the couch, followed by the man beside him who most likely was Sebastian. My eyes widened as I passed Gilbert and made my way directly to Sebastian. After I rambled on and on to him, I held out my hand in order to shake it with Sebastian. A little while passed and he took it, smiling at me.
"Who'd care for some supper?" Marilla smiled.
"Oh, everything smells so good," Sebastian replied happily.
"Ever tried mince pies?"
"No, but my nose tells me I like it," Sebastian chuckled.
I laughed along with him until Marilla told me to go blow out the candles on the tree. I nodded, and made my way to the beautiful Christmas tree perched in the corner of the room. Smiling, I was about to proceed with blowing out the candles when a deep voice interrupted me.
"Anne."
I turned, just to be met with Gilbert. He had a small brown package in his hand. I looked up at him.
"Merry Christmas," he smiled as he stuck out the pretty present for me to take. I obliged, taking it into the comfort of my small hands.
"But I don't have anything for you," I said softly. Feeling a slight twinge of guilt, I looked up at Gilbert.
"It's alright." He smiled softly and I immediately returned his warm smile. I turned to the tree and started blowing out the candles with Gilbert helping me. We both reached over to blow out the last candle. I gulped as I realized how close we were. Gilbert smirked, keeping his face near mine. I tried to move away from him, but then felt his large hand position my face closer to his. He smiled and leaned in, connecting our lips together.
My eyes widened as I dropped my hands to my side. His lips were warm and he moved them softly against mine. I stayed still, not knowing what to do. Diana was right. We should really learn about kissing etiquette.
I shut my eyes, copying what Gilbert was doing. He moved closer to me, trying to make me kiss back. My lips were parted against his, from how surprised I was. I could feel the blush rising to my cheeks. How embarrassing this was! I didn't even know how to respond to Gilbert's abrupt action.
Gilbert pulled away, looking into my eyes. I stared back into his own, and was met with his worried eyes. Touching my fingertips to the blush on my cheeks, I hurried out of the room to the dining room table leaving a hurt and confused Gilbert behind.
The mince pie on my plate was slowly getting devoured as I cut a piece off the pie, putting the morsel into my mouth. I looked down at my plate, not looking up because Gilbert Blythe happened to sit right across from me. I smiled lightly when Sebastian talked about the mystical island of Trinidad.
"Anne Shirley-Cuthburt, are you alright?" Marilla asked.
"Oh, yes, Marilla I'm perfectly alright!"
Marilla raised an eyebrow and continued to eat. The rest of supper I was silent. Marilla took our dishes to have them washed leaving the rest of us at the supper table.
"Well," Matthew said, "I'll go fetch something from outside." He smiled quickly and made his way out the door.
Sebastian made his way over to Gilbert and chuckled, whispering something in his ear I could barely make out to be, "I can take a hint, Blythe." Gilbert rolled his eyes playfully.
"Anne, it was extremely nice to meet you. I'll go take a look at your farm if you don't mind," Sebastian smiled.
"Not at all," I smiled back.
He made his way outside. Gilbert turned towards me and cleared his throat, looking straight into my eyes. I got flustered and sat up from the table.
"Sebastian probably wants to talk to you, I-I should go," I stuttered.
"Wait, Anne!" Gilbert got up from the table and followed me up the stairs to my room.
"Anne, did I do something wrong?" he asked.
"No, no, it was definitely not you," I shook my head as I sat on my bed. Gilbert immediately sat next to me.
"I'm sorry, that I kissed you so suddenly. I don't know why I did," he sighed.
"Gilbert." I turned around and took his face in my hands. "I liked it, truly."
Gilbert smiled, looking proud.
"Then why didn't you kiss back?" he joked.
I blushed, "I don't know how."
Gilbert looked at me and soon burst into laughter.
"Don't laugh at my mortifying embrassment! Gilbert Blythe, you are ridiculous," I joked.
He smiled and turned to face me.
"You won't have to be embarrassed, Anne. I'll teach you sometime," he winked.
I blushed and rolled my eyes. Gilbert smiled softly and wrapped his arms around me.
"Merry Christmas, Anne."
"Merry Christmas, Gilbert."
