So, new chapter. A bit of a climax for this one.
Anyhoo, on with the story!
It was about 5 o’clock when I heard something from outside my room.
Getting up silently, I wrapped one of the sheets around my shoulders and neck, then grabbed the metal baseball bat I had retrieved from my house with Way’s permission… It was evidence for the case, but he claimed to have no use for it anymore. The blood had been cleaned off the bat, but it still had a massive dent in its side.
Grasping the handle in my hands, I held it in a defensive position, slowly opening the door with a creak, then going out bat-first. The early morning rays of sun ran along the steel surface, making the bat shine in the light.
“You’re fucking kidding me—that’s why…” “Way, it’s fine. Another clinic might be willing to donate, it’s just gonna take a while to find one.” “What happened to the back-ups? Did they pull out too?”
Dante and Way… I lowered the bat and stopped. I had half a mind to go back to my room, but…. What were they arguing over? “… Yeah… But it’s okay! We’ll just find another clinic around the area—hell, I’ll go and get the packs myself for you.” “That’s not gonna work, Dante… If we try too many places, any enemy of both of ours will realize and probably poison their whole storage in order to eliminate us…” Way’s voice had dropped quite a bit. “That’s… true…” Dante fell silent again. “Anyway… We’re monitoring small towns around the Brooklyn outskirts, and a few seem very likely to hold Malign in there. We’re investigating these towns right now. Once we find his whereabouts, we’ll inform you and apprehend him—” “I’ll be the one to apprehend him. Malign Mass is a murderer we cannot take lightly, and the kid needs experience on the field…. Plus I can feel that she wishes to avenge her family’s death, so she may be able to vent some of that vengeance out on him if he resists.” There was a short silence.
“… I see. In that case, I’ll inform the Bureau of this and continue our investigation.” Footsteps were heard and Dante had left out the front door leading to the main hallway. I could hear an exhausted groan from the living room. “Dammit, why’d it have to be now… If it were earlier…” I stepped out slowly, biting my lips a bit as I let the bat fall lower to the ground, barely an inch from touching it.
“Way. What’s going on?”
My voice must have caught him by surprise—the vampyre’s eyes were wide, and I could just see the faint red etching the inside of his irises. “X… You were listening.” He had said, his voice wavering at the slightest. “I just happened to wake up in time. I didn’t hear anything other than that something ran out and you’re now in shit because of it, and that the killer is one step closer to being caught.” I leaned the bat against the wall before crossing my arms. Way seemed a little more relieved now the bat had been put down, but still looked like a caged animal. His hand ran through his hair once, tugging it a little before heaving a light sigh. “You know how I said that I have to feed thrice a day in order to continue being sane?” He asked, one hand going into his pocket and his weight shifting onto one leg, eyes cast down at the ground. I nodded softly, an eyebrow furrowing a bit.
What was he getting at? He couldn’t be… wait. Oh shit. “The blood clinic I had been getting my rations off has pulled out of the deal… I had back-up clinics but they also had withdrawn, reasons unknown. Probably not enough donors or something… But, well, that’s not all.” My gut turned at his words—I had already figured it. “Bloodlust...” I murmured, suddenly feeling a wave of apprehension wash over me. He nodded softly, his face deader than the grave. I had to stop myself from falling over; the memory, that scene from that night, it just came to me… could Way do something like that? No, more like how strong is his drive for blood… I feared the answer, that’s all I could think.
