Chapter One

*Jem*

"Okay, let me go in first, then, if it's safe, I'll call for you."

"Alright, if you insist." Will says, Smirking and moving the dark hair from his eyes. I go into the building, look around, seems OK.

"Come on in!" I yell, "It's all clear!"

"Who are we looking for anyway??" He says, sounding bored.

"Not who, what."

"Okay, what are we looking for??"

"Greater demons, three of them." He reaches for a dagger. "Not yet, there's no sense in wasting them, wait."

"Patience is not a virtue of mine."

"Yes, I am aware, now, be quiet, we really need to focus." We both listen for any sounds that may alert us that a greater demon is around, but we hear nothing.

"There's nothing here, let's go, I told Tessa I'd be back in an hour."

"We just got here, and we have to wait, there has to be something here."

"Well, there's not, and besides, it's not like we've never taken on a few greater demons before." He says, looking at his nails.

"We haven't, Will, ever." There's a soft clanging sound coming from above us. "Shhhh, did you hear it??"

"Yeah, let's go." We creep up the creaky old staircase, once we get up, I put my arm in front of Will so he doesn't go ahead of me. The clanging is louder now. As we get closer, the smell gets more pungent, there are definitely more than three. Will takes his Dagger out. I nod. We stay close to the walls, kicking doors open as we go. There's one straight ahead of us, we get closer.

"Be very, very quiet." I tell Will. He nods and gets closer.

"Now??" He mouths.

"Now." He throws the dagger and it sticks in the creatures side, it roars and spins to face us. One of it's tentacles shoots out, hitting Will in the stomach. He screams and clutches his stomach. The color drains from his face and he crumples to the ground.

"Will!!" I run over and kill the demon. Then I bend down by Will.

"Hey, wake up!! Will?" There's a circle of dark blood seeping through his shirt and pooling underneath him. I pick him up and put him over my shoulder.

I pound on Magnus Bane's door over and over until He answers. I don't even give him time to ask him questions.

"You can help him right?!"

"I will do what I can." He looks at me. "Get Tessa, something tells me she'll want to be here." I run from Magnus' house. I know where to find Tessa.

***Tessa***

I run through the door and put my hands on my knees so I can catch my breath. Magnus comes in. I look at him expectantly.

"Well?"

"He's alive, but he's weak."

"Can I see him?"

"Absolutely." I go to the room where he's keeping Will.

"Tessa, it's about time..." He coughs. "You got here, you really know how to keep a man waiting." I smile and brush the sweaty hair from his eyes.

"Still Witty, even when you're dying"

"Is that what I'm doing? Dying? Please tell me I'm not, I don't wanna leave you here alone." His voice strains against pain and exhaustion. I take his hand.

"You're not going anywhere and neither am I. I'm here until the end." He smiles at me.

"So am I."

Will is asleep, he's paler than normal. I haven't let go of his hand. Magnus comes in with a steaming mug, He hands it to me.

"What is it?"

"Apple Cider, it will help  him feel better, have him drink it when he wakes up."

"Okay." Magnus leaves the room. I look at Will, his eyes flutter open, it surprises me that their shocking violet blue has not dulled. "Magnus brought this, he wants you to drink this."

"What is it?"

"Apple Cider, you like apple cider right?"

"Yes." He looks into my eyes. "Can you help me? I don't want to drop it."

"Of course I can." I help him sit up a little, fluffing the pillow behind him. I bring the mug to his lips and gently tilt it back. He swallows.

"Mmm, that's good." He takes a few more drinks. "That's good for now, thank you." He settles back into the soft mattress a ocean of pillows. I fix the blankets and kiss his forehead. He sighs softly. He takes my hand and kisses it. "I love you Tessa." He whispers.

"I love you too Will."
