"Ahn my sister...e be like say you no de alright o!", Bella reprimanded Ada in pidgin English. They were walking to school together when Ada opened up to her friend about what had transpired between her and Femi. Bella listened to the end of the story. She was at first surprised and then relieved. Then she began to tease Ada a little. "immediately he tell me say he get fiancée, I go just pick my sandal and run. Why I go wait there? Me I no want wahala with any married person or engaged one oh! Wetin you go do if his girlfriend comes and bring trouble your side?"
At first, Ada laughed because Bella who had a proper English accent was speaking pidgin which she wonderfully failed at. Then she started to defend herself, "ah, no now, I wanted to leave but, he held me back because he was still talking na."
Bella looked at her sharply, "he said, he wanted to still be friends with you se?"
"Yes"
"and he hugged you."
"yes, before he left, he said he just wanted to hug me."
"and you hugged him"
"Yes na. Bella don't look at me with a judgemental eye abeg. Me too, I was wondering if I should hug him or not."
Bella's mind began to do an overturn. With the way she was seeing things, Femi was not using his sense properly. She did not expect the Femi who was looking so responsible in class to behave this way to a lady. It seemed to her that Femi had ulterior motives and it was unnerving Bella. She did not want Ada to be hurt. From what she had heard from her, Femi hugged her so tightly and for a long time which could mean he was interested in her. Warning bells started exploding anyhow in her head. She had to warn her friend from people like him. thank God he did not do anything else but hug her. If it had passed that stage, hmmm.......
"Ada look, you know as a Christian lady, you cannot do relationships except you are ready for marriage. And even at this stage. It cant happen! No matter how much you like someone, you just don't go around telling them. Its because you did not go to the high school I went na."
"I know. I don't even know why I told him sef. I don't need a relationship at this point. Ah! My high school was a public school na. I knew how they used to do. But because my friends then were bad girls and stuff, they used to tell me that if I had a crush on anybody, I should just tell them. That it's not as if they will swallow me"
"mmhmm" Bella replied with a face that said, "na-you-sabi'
"I'm serious!" Ada threw up her arms in frustration. Bella just laughed.
"Oya, it is okay. Sha don't talk to him about this thing again. and pls act normal around him. Don't even give a damn about him. " Bella advised her, "Me, I once had a crush but I didn't even tell the person. I let it go away. Crushes don't really last. They always go. So please don't act on them. Don't make rash decisions."
"I've heard o, mummy. I'm not acting on it na. Abi which one be your own sef?" Ada joked and the two of them exploded into laughter. They continued their gisting until they reached the front of the art building. Mike and Charles, who were always loitering around, came to them and started greeting them especially Ada with sly smiles and terrible pick-up lines. Bella just ignored them. Her mind was on the Femi issue. He was not behaving the way most engaged men who are faithful to their fiancée behave. Or is it that he wanted to just play Ada? Whatever it is, I swear, I will give him the embarrassment of his life if he does anything to Ada. All these useless men sef!
As they walked into class, she struggled to keep her face passive. She watched Ada's face and was glad that she was holding up quite good. When Femi walked in, Bella wanted to turn her face away but changed her mind and went to greet him warmly as she had done other days. Then she dragged him to where Ada was sitting and urged him to help Ada with her Project which Ada was finding a little difficult to do. If he had said anything to Ada in the past couple days, he did not show it. Rather, he willingly helped her.
"Ada what is the problem with your work?", He asked bending to focus his gaze on her project. "Now, let's see. Your edges are a little bit off. And the colour is merging on this side. I think you should fix it here and..."
Ada just looked up at Bella, her eyes screaming for help.
