It is a warm summer morning, the common room glinting gold as the sun shines through the the tower windows. Remus sits in an alcove in the wall underneath a huge stainglass window, rays of sun play on his sharp, angled features, casting a light red glow onto his face.
The Gryffindor common room is uncharacteristically quiet and empty of students, however Remus supposed most people would be out in the grounds, enjoying the summer air, unlike him, sitting inside on his own with a mug of tea and stack of books by his side. It's not that he particularly wants to be alone, but James and Lily are out somewhere having "couple time" and Remus didn't want to be there for that even if he was invited, and no one has seen Sirius all morning. It's strange; you can always at least count on Sirius' ability to be heard.
A short, muffled cry comes from up the stairs in the boys dormitories, interrupting the quiet. It is the sort of sob that isn't meant to be heard - and wouldn't have been if it weren't for Remus' wolf senses. Even when it isn't a full moon, his senses are exceedingly higher than everyone else's. Remus turns, confused, in the direction of the stairway; he didn't realise anyone was in the dormitories. Maybe he had imagined the sound. Maybe the heat is getting to his head from sitting in front of the window for so long. But no, the cry came again, louder than the last.
Walking into the dorm Remus saw, to his surprise, Sirius Black curled face down on his bed, head burried in the covers and hands clutching his dripping wet hair that falls loose around his neck. Wearing only a towel around his waist, Remus can see the long scar on his upper arm and shoulder from a quidditch accident in fourth year, surrounded by the fainter white scars on his back from his childhood before he moved in with the Potters. Seeing him like this made Remus want to go over and hold his boyfriend until he stopped crying. So that's what he did.
On his way over to the boy, Sirius must have heard Remus and sat up to look at him. The sight of Sirius is heart breaking. Tears streamed down his red blotchy cheeks and onto the duvet cover, adding to the wet patches his hair has made already. "Moony," he chokes out inbetween sobs.
Rushing over, Remus grabs at the other boy, checking he's alright. "Sirius what's wrong? Tell me, what's wrong?" he pleads.
"My hair," he sniffs, "what you did, it fell out. I loved it so much Moony and it's not there anymore."
"It's okay Pads, it's alright." Remus is trying his best to soothe Sirius and calm him down. He's still blubbering quietly into Remus' shirt. "Look Padfoot I can do it again. I can do it again," he repeats, unsure Sirius heard the first time.
It takes a while for Sirius to finally retract himself from Remus' shirt and look at him. "Okay," he says simply. "Okay."
And with that Remus moves to sit behind Sirius on the bed, his legs wrapping around Sirius' torso as he begins to braid his damp hair. Remus hums while he works, partly out of habit and partly to relax Sirius. Sirius loves it and loves Remus even more than he would have thought possible a few days ago.
