"Some people come back to haunt you no matter how deep you bury them".
- 'Diary of the dead' (1976)
Charlotte and Oswald strolled through the mansion as well as many other guests. The dark wooden walls were covered with flags of the Founders' Dinner and expensive looking paintings. The two stopped in front of the well-decorated table and took a glass of champagne from the tray one of the servants was holding. They took a few more steps forward while observing all the rich people in the room around them with curious eyes.
Then, to Oswald's horror, someone bumped against him causing him to spill all his champagne over his suit and Charlotte to let go of his arm in surprise.
The man who bumped against Oswald was tall and wore a plaid purple suit with a blood red vest underneath along with a black bowtie. His brown hair reached just above his shoulders and his dark brown eyes stared at Charlotte and Oswald with a tint of mischief.
"Watch where you're going!" Oswald exclaimed frustratedly.
"Of course, Mr. Mayor," replied the other man. "So sorry".
"Cretin," Oswald mumbled before walking away without even waiting for Charlotte.
She chuckled and looked at the man apologetically. "Please excuse my friend. He's been under lots of stress lately. Enjoy the rest of your evening". Charlotte was going to walk away but the man called after her.
"Ma'am. Let me just tell you how captivating you look tonight. Your beauty shines so, so bright". He extended his hand for her. "Jervis Tetch".
The blonde took his hand and Jervis planed a kiss on her knuckles. "Charlotte Bateman. Thank you, sir. You don't look so bad yourself".
Jervis made a small bow before he let go of Charlotte's hand. Both parted ways and Charlotte continued to drink her champagne as she stared after the strange man. He had certainly impressed her.
She snapped out of it and looked for Oswald. She found him talking to a blonde middle-aged woman. Well, he was the one doing all the talking while she stared at him with a severe look. Charlotte decided not to interrupt them and walked around as she drank her second glass of champagne. The alcohol helped ease the pain she felt inside after her breakup with Ed and that was exactly what she wanted.
After a while, there was a sound of someone tapping a piece of cutlery on a glass. All the guests started sitting around the long table and Charlotte did the same, leaving an empty seat beside her for Oswald. He sat down beside her with a confused look on his face as he looked at the other guests.
"What's wrong, Oswald?" Charlotte asked him curiously and Oswald looked at her with a crease on his forehead.
"Did you know who was that severe-looking woman I was talking to?" He asked.
