CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Hope will never be silent.

- Harvey Milk

"No way!" Rebecca screamed.

She was so loud that Lucy had to move her cell phone away from her ear. Lucy was eager to tell their family and closest friends their news within the next few weeks at the end of her first trimester. They were all so happy and encouraging, and it made Lucy feel much braver. Lucy could not wait to tell Rebecca.

"Yes," Lucy said smiling. "We wasn't really even trying. It just kinda happened."

Lucy knew Rebecca would be excited. However, Lucy had a few worries. One, Meg was still pretty young, so she knew it would be little difficult with another two babies with separate needs and wants. Second, Lucy worried about how her and Jason would be able to handle all the kids. With Caleb and Kale it was easy, they just planned man-to-man. When Meg joined the mix they turned into a zone defense. Adding two more players to the other team made Lucy worry, but she knew Caleb would be helpful. Third, Lucy knew she was a little older in her years. After age thirty-five she knew risks of something going wrong was increased and that was without multiples. Lucy was scared, but she was also so excited. She was very hopeful everything would be wonderful, and she wanted to tell everybody the blessings God was giving them.

"Oh. Luce, I am so excited for you!" Rebecca said. "I wish I was with you."

Leaving Wilton Creek was difficult for Lucy knowing she was leaving Rebecca behind. Life was once again splitting them in different directions like in college. Lucy missed her terribly, but she was so grateful that she had a friend who made every little change seem so easy. She knew Rebecca would still be there for her like always with words of wisdom or an ear to talk to without judgement.

"Thanks, Bec. But uhh, there is something else."

"Well, tell me––tell me! Wait hold on," she said.

Lucy waited a moment while Rebecca was fussing on the phone to Hannah, her newest addition. Hannah was a year older than Meg, and often found herself getting in trouble. Lucy never got through a phone call with Rebecca without her having to get Hannah out of something.

"Sorry, sorry. You have my attention again," Rebecca said.

"I'm having twins."

Lucy waited for Rebecca to respond, but silence was filling the phone. Lucy pulled the phone back to see if they were disconnected, but Rebecca was still on the line.

"You're joking," she finally said. "I'm not falling for that."

"I am being serious."

"Are you for real?"

"It's not a joke Beck. I'm dead serious."

"Twins? As in two, dos, one plus one?" Rebecca said, gaining in excitement.

Lucy laughed. "Yes. Two. Baby A and a Baby B."

Lucy pulled the phone away from her ear again as Rebecca's screams of excitement filled the phone.

"Beck, quiet screaming you are going to burst my eardrum," Lucy said laughing. Lucy was actually grateful for the reaction. It made her forget all her worries.

"Sorry I just can't believe it. Five kids! Twins! It's what you have always dreamed of! A big family! Plus twins how lucky––how exhilarating. I am so jealous! But also so happy for you Luce. Now I really wish I was there. Oh my goodness!"
