"Dude duck!" Someone called to my brother as a beach ball came whirling at his head. Luca, with his carefree way and easy going vibe, laughed as the ball hit him. Using a muscled arm he then threw the ball back to the guy.
I smiled and looked at all our friends surfing and relaxing on the beach. Summer was my favorite time because there was no school so we could surf all day. I mean who didn't love warm sand, blue skies, and sunshine?
My friends and I were all incredibly close, so close people would joke that we were a surfing cult. Which was one of my least favorite things to hear. We just looked out for each other and treated each other as family.
I looked at my skin and realized I was getting red and was going to go borrow someone's sunscreen when I heard the rumble of motorcycles and knew trouble was brewing. I quickly got up and started walking to the sand dunes which was where the stairs that led onto the beach were. Not shortly after I started getting close some of the members of the local motorcycle gang were walking up the steps. They were laughing and seemed to be having a good time that is until they saw we were here. Their leader Sander was of course leading the way and he immediately saw me coming towards them.
"Lexa what a pleasure to see you." He told me with a smirk.
"Sander what are you doing here? Did you forget it's our day?"
Tuesday's were our day which meant they weren't suppose to be here. A couple years back Sander and his biker gang wanted to start using this beach too and it became quickly apparent that that wasn't going to work out. Too many arguments broke out which sometimes led to fist fights so to help prevent that we came to an agreement. The agreement stated that the surfers got the beach on Tuesday's and Thursday's and the bikers got the beach Monday's and Friday's. The weekends switched every week and this weekend was our weekend which meant next weekend was their weekend. Many surfers and bikers weren't happy with this agreement but on the days we couldn't come to this beach there was a smaller beach that was further to drive to but still good to hang out at.
His smirk grew bigger. "Course I didn't forget, just wanted to see how the waves look before we make the long hike to Malberry."
I rolled my eyes. "It's not that far, don't be so dramatic."
"Then why can't you and your stupid washed out surfers do it?"
I ignored his insults. "Because we like this beach too. That's why the agreement was made."
Without warning he got very close to me, so close our noses were almost touching. I wasn't afraid of Sander but with his dark hair, dark eyes, black leather jacket, piercings, and cocky grin he could definitely be intimidating to say the least.
"I know why the dumbass agreement was made I'm saying it's stupid."
His eyes drilled into mine and honestly I had to admit without a doubt Sander was extremely attractive. It wasn't hard to understand why every girl found him hot. He had the whole hot biker bad boy look going strong.
"We got a problem here Sander?" I heard my brother ask from somewhere behind me.
Sander gave my bikini clad body a once over then gave me a cocky smirk. He turned to my brother before I could react. "Nothing at all, we were just leaving actually."
With that Sander and his leather clad friends left. I still had no idea how they all wore skinny jeans in the summer heat.
"You okay sis?" Luca asked me.
"Yeah fine." I smiled at him. "I need sunscreen though."
After reapplying sunscreen and letting it sink in I went out on my board. I surfed the waves and felt so free and content. There was nothing that could make me feel the way surfing did.
"Lexa! Time for dinner!" I heard Luca shout from the shore.
I road in and we packed up some of our stuff and said goodbye to our friends for now as we went home to eat. Our parents were perfectly happy with us out surfing all day but they wanted us home for dinner.
"Hi ma!" I yelled as I entered the house. "Hi dad!"
"What's up birth givers." Luca shouted as he came in behind me.
"Birth givers?" I fixed him with a look.
"What?" He asked. "It's a true fact."
I rolled my eyes as I entered the dinning room in my cover up. I sat down in my usual seat across from my mom and Luca took his usual seat next to me.
Mom laughed. "Hello my children."
We did grace then started scooping different things on our plates. My mom was an amazing cook and I always looked forward to her dinners.
"How was your day?" Dad asked.
"Awesome! I caught narly waves." I smiled.
"Same and today would have been perfect if Sander and his idiot biker friends didn't show up."
"Relax Luca they were there for only a minute." I said trying to keep the peace.
"Sander was there today?" Mom asked with her eyebrows raised.
"Yeah and he was so checking Lexa out." Luca said bitterly.
I almost choked on my food. "He was not." I obviously knew he was but seriously wanted my brother to not get mad. The peace formed between our two groups took such a long, hard time to form and literally a pebble could break it and I didn't want that.
Mom changed the subject. "Are you guys going to Malberry tomorrow since it's Sander's day?"
"Course." I smiled while my brother just stared at his food.
I groaned. "Cmon Luca let it go he's just a jerk and he wanted to piss you off you're doing what he wants."
"Lexa language please." Mom was pretty chill about everything but cursing.
"Sorry mom."
Luca sighed. "I'll let it go for now but that guy is on thin ice okay? If he even thinks about putting a hand on you I'll kick his as-"
"Language!" Mom said sternly.
"Sorry mom." Luca told her bowing his head.
Dinner continued as usual with us all talking about our days and just anything that came to mind. We laughed and joked and had fun. After dinner Luca and I drove back to the beach in his car which was only like a minute from our house.
At the beach our friends were already setting up the bonfire. I put on music which was connected to a powerful speaker and my friends and I danced around.
Arielle being my best friend knew as soon as Try Everything by Shakira came on I'd want a partner to dance with. Ever since we were kids Arielle and I loved three things: dancing, The Little Mermaid (we always wanted to be mermaids) and surfing. We also were huge Disney nerds and loved on rainy days sitting inside watching movies, which several Disney movies would be put on.
"Look how far you've come..." I sang as I danced around.
"Hey Lexa? Can you help us start the fire, we need your expertise." Rich called from the big pile that was set up.
I smiled. "Course."
What I loved about my friends was that they weren't sexist. They knew us girls could do just as much as them if not more.
I went over and after a couple tries got the fire going. We all gathered around the fire and told jokes or stories and had a great time. I watched as the last of the sun set on the horizon and admired the colors. Today had been such a nice day and I looked forward to tomorrow.
