What Just Happened?

(chapter 6)

The tree branches are digging into my flesh as I walk.

Nelson is running ahead, but then stops and waits for me. When I catch up, he runs ahead again.

Its nighttime now, and there's only a few lights on.

I have been walking for 40 minutes now, or at least I think...

I realize that I'm really tired. I have been up for a while...

I go over to the side of the road and lay down on the grass.

Nelson flops down beside me.

Poor little guy. He's so tired, but he still stayed with me and kept going.

I give him a good scratch behind the ear, he grunts and starts to wag his tail.

I smile, then start to think about life before the earthquake.

The time when we had that picnic at the park and Nelson got attacked by a skunk.

When Dad and I went to the fair and he won me a stuffed animal. (I love that little Hippo!!)

The time when Nicki and I took that bike ride and we almost fell in the mud.

When Mom cried at my graduation...

...

I missed them...

I hope their ok. The only way to know is to find out myself!

I pick up my tree branches and start to get up.

My leg is throbbing and sore.

I start to hobble over to Russell's house again.

Nelson sighs, gets up, and starts to walk with me.

15 minutes later, I was finally at Russell's house.

I must have been closer than I thought!

I knock on the door first.

No one came, so I went inside.

It was very quiet, a little erie actually, like one of those horror films...

"Nicki? Russell? Any body home?"

At first it was quiet, then

"Amber! Is that you?"

It was Nicki.

"Nicki! Your ok!! Where are you?"

"I'm in the basement!! Hurry!!"

Oh no.

Nelson runs ahead of me and runs down the stairs.

I, on the other hand, hobble as fast as I can and then realize,

How am I supposed to go down the stairs?

...

Very carefully.

I put my branches on the first step and then lift myself down.

I do that over and over again, and finally, I was downstairs.

It didn't look too bad, a few boards and bricks on the ground, and a few things knocked over.

I hobble around and found Nicki and Russell on the couch.

Nicki doesn't look too shaken up, a few bruises and cuts here and there, and a lump on her head.

But other than that, she seemed fine.

It looked like she had been crying...

Nelson lunges up to Nicki and starts licking her.

She smiled, laughed, and scratched his back.

I stumble up to her.

"Hey Nicki,"

"Amber! Oh thank God your all right!!"

She rushes up and hugs the life out of me.

I start to cry again, I was so happy she was ok!!

"Amber! what happened to your leg?"

Oh yea...

I start to tell her my story, the Jeep, the hospital, Laura, Alex, Charlie and Mackenzie, the lamp post, and the long bike/walk up here.

"Oh Amber, You poor thing!"

"Ya... It is kinda scary when you think about it..."

"I can't believe Nelsons ok too!!"

She smiled and scratched him again.

"How's Russell? Is he ok?"

Nicki's smile disappears and she starts to cry.

Uh oh.

I go over to Russell and find his head bleeding.

A brick was beside him on the floor.

I put 2 and 2 together.

The brick must have fell on his head.

I check his pulse.

...

Russell was dead.
