Beep.

My unawareness cracked. Dizziness - that's all I knew, and spinning in the darkness like a whirligig I floated through my own memories. Fire, smoke, bodies, blood...

Beep.

My pulse jumped. Then again, that sound - sharp and squeaky, making the hair on my skin bristle.

Beep.

The darkness behind my closed eyelids diluted around me like a texture of jet black brightened with white added to the mix and soon my vision went completely white, overtaken by light.

Beep.

With the sound and the light returned the pain as well. The numbness gathered itself in my body, into tiny knots of tension stinging the tips of my fingers before it vanished completely, leaving warm pulsing pain vibrating through me.

Shit, I wanted to scream, but my body still wasn't working. It was as though my mind had woken up, but my limbs remained paralyzed. I swallowed the pinch of panic rising in my throat as a headache knocked at my temples in the rhythm of the beep sounds - in the rhythm of my heartbeat.

Finally I made a sound. A groan.

My eyes slightly burned as I opened them, but quickly they adjusted to the light. I let my gaze trail left and right. Bluish walls, a nightstand, the upper half of the wall transected by the door made out of glass.

My fingers curled around the white covers I lied on as I attempted to pull myself up into a sitting position. Air fled my lungs like someone punched me in the stomach and quickly I relaxed my arms, waiting for the burning rush of agony to retreat.

"He's awake." My brother's voice made me flinch.

I blinked. My vision sharpened, and I sat up - a sharp motion I instantly regretted.

"Shit," I hissed.

"Oh would you look at that?" Tom mused, "not even when he's half dead he's gonna take it easy. Typical."

I ignored him. Fire, smoke, bodes, blood...

My heartbeat quickened and I snapped my head to my brother. "Where's Josh?"

The pain lessened as the first rush of adrenaline entered my bloodstream. For how long was I even out? He could be...

"Alive." Tom smiled.

I furrowed my brows, slowly, in suspicion.

Tom shrugged. "And fine."

I let out my breath but held onto the tension in my muscles.

"And Hannah?"

"With the Phylumins," he answered, frowning now, "also fine - well, as fine as she can be, but we're all like that now I guess - just as fine as we can be."

I gripped the smooth covers caressing the bare skin of my legs then threw them off me before I flung my legs towards the floor.

"Wow, Oli, stop." Tom's hands landed on my shoulders. "You're literally on IV's. You've been out for like 36 hours."
