I watched my brother as he paced next to Hannah, a wide smile on his face, not at all like he almost died yesterday.
Okay, perhaps he hadn't almost died and perhaps I told everyone to keep their mouth shut about it so he didn't even know what exactly was going on.
Though Emma explained to me his damaged chip was probably messing with his nervous system, I led him to believe the problem lied in my electromagnetic field.
The look Josh gave me when I told everyone we tell Tom it's just me and my messed up silver tolerance was almost painful to recall.
I was convinced he was going to cool off and eventually get why I made the decision I made, but he still hasn't spoken to me.
I didn't understand what was his problem with secrets these days.
Telling the psycho Commander he was The President's son would only make her want to kill him, and telling Tom his chip was the problem would make him want to let Emma take it out and that wasn't safe. It took Emma three days to wake up after she cut her chip out and five more to recover. The process could've killed her and it could easily kill Tom - especially since his chip wasn't nor iron nor steel.
I thought I was gonna feel better the second we leave that plain of death behind us, but we were already walking for at least two hours and my mood was still beyond killed.
For a second I allowed myself to look for Josh with my gaze.
When I didn't find him, I sighed.
Why did everything have to be so complicated?
I returned my gaze to Tom and Hannah walking a couple feet in front of me.
The forest here was a lot clearer than before the plain. Barely any bush rose from the ground so I almost felt as if I was walking across the bare stone ground covering The Salt Mines. The only difference here were the leaves, rustling beneath my shoes with each new step I'd take.
This forest almost seemed like someone had planted it. The trees grew in straight lines, a couple meters apart, their treetops intertwining together in the heights, creating clean tree tunnels for us to move through.
Not much Sun reached us, but the sky was still somewhat visible. I suppose the weather was just generally cloudy today.
I didn't mind, it matched my mood. I was just thankful for the smell of death to be gone. I never thought I'd enjoy the smell of soil so much in my life - especially not after growing up in the mines.
"Is Tom alright?" Kellin appeared next to me.
"He seems pretty alright to me." I jerked my head towards him and Hannah.
"What happened?" He asked.
I looked at him with narrow eyes.
The fact Tom was obviously much better at making friends then I was probably shouldn't have rubbed me the wrong way as much as it did. I hated the fact he seemed to get along with everyone I couldn't stand. Perhaps he was doing it on purpose.
"What?" Kellin rolled his eyes. "Am I not allowed to ask?"
"Why are you asking?" I answered him with a question.
"Because I was once chipped and I damaged my chip yet your electromagnetic field doesn't do shit to me," he said.
"Well-"
