"You're a... vampire." The words were barely a whisper before being dragged away in the wind. They were loud enough though. Loud enough for Zach to hear. Serious enough for him to spin around to face me. To storm towards me. I was able to feel his breath on my face. I was sure he was going to hit me.  I was sure I couldn't cope with the consequences. Every moment he stood there I regretted my words, but I had to say it. I had to know the truth.

"Cassia." Zach exhaled. He took one step away. Far enough for me to just see his face lit dimly in the street light. His face. It was as I had known for years, except now there were the fangs. His fangs. The fangs he'd had for his whole life. The fangs I'd only just found out about. "It took you long enough." Now he was smirking, at me, as if I should have known all along. But I hadn't. "Let me walk you home" That smirk was still there. I was seriously considering wiping it off his face in the most painful way possible.

"Why didn't you tell me?!" My voice returning. Zach had started to walk away but my I wasn't moving until I got some answers. I was supposed to follow him. He was going to walk me home. I didn't want to walk home with a vampire. Hang on a minute. My boyfriend since the start of high school was a vampire and I hadn't known. 7 years and he hadn't told me. "Zach! Don't walk away from me! What's going on?!"

"Look. This shouldn't change anything between us. I still love you. I just had to wait for you to figure this out on your own." That smirk had vanished. Damn! I hadn't had chance to painfully remove it. He was serious though. Like deadly serious. It scared me a bit. Not the fact that my boyfriend was a vampire but that he was openly talking about how he felt about me. "Let me walk you home. Please. I'll explain everything I promise." In that moment. In his eyes. I could tell. He meant it.

We walked away from the dim street light. Away from what had just happened. Zach walked slowly which was unusual for him but I didn't care. It gave us more time. "Okay so basically, I'm a vampire." Yea, I thought. I got that from, I don't know, the fangs maybe! Wow sometimes he could be really stupid! "I've been a vampire my whole life but I couldn't tell you. I have reasons but I'm sorry I can't tell you or I would seriously have to kill you." Charming I thought! There was no way I was going to interrupt though. "You would have known longer if you had worked it out for yourself. I don't know how you worked it out now but I'm glad you did." Then instead of a smirk or the deadly serious glare there was a smile. A genuine smile and I truly appreciated that.

"Zach. I saw you... feeding." It was true. I witnessed my own boyfriend drink the blood of a deer. I heard a sound so I naturally turned around and saw my boyfriend bent over a deer. Blood falling to the floor. I now knew he had to to survive but then it hit me. "Did you ever you know... drink my blood?" I had to ask but I was afraid of the answer.

"No! I wouldn't have done that! At least not without your permission and that was never going to happen." That was a relief! I could see my house now, casting a shadow onto the road. I wanted to know more yet I was sure I'd heard enough. Standing now in that shadow, with a street light either side of us. I was about to say goodbye but my mouth couldn't form the words. Zach took this opportunity to lean in to kiss me and in spite of what I knew I let him. I closed my eyes as I usually did but now I could feel them. They were sharp but didn't hurt me, but they were there. Proof. The proof I needed. I felt his fangs against my lip and smiled.
