The car ride over to Zach's house was mostly spent in silence. Zach focused on the road and I focused on Zach. He was so pale, which was something I hadn't really noticed in all our time spent together but now I knew, I understood why. His eyes always seemed to be a different colour and today they were such a deep green they almost looked black. His hair was the same short and such a dark brown it too almost looked black. Maybe it was because he was so pale that every other one of his features were so dark. We both realised I had been staring at him for the whole ride and still he just smiled at me. I didn't even realise the car had stopped until Zach got out of the car and just as quickly opened my door for me. I got out of the car and realised we were at the top of a rather large hill. I didn't notice until I looked at Zach that his house was more like a mansion. It was absolutely huge! It too was dark and seemed to loom over us and the car. It was alone on what I assumed was his 'street' which probably was because the sheer size of the house took up most of the space available on the hill.
"Zach why have I never been to your house until now?" I knew I had to ask and I was just as certain that I had no idea what his answer would be. Sometimes if I was alone for long enough I would start thinking about things which usually involved Zach. Quite a few times I wondered why Zach had practically lived at mine on occasions (well he certainly made himself at home) and I had never visited his home. I'd met his parents but only at social events and never in their own domain as Zach had frequently spoke to mine.
"You never knew. I couldn't risk it." I must have shown my confusion to this as he just smiled immediately putting me at ease. "You'll see when we're inside." His smile was growing with every step we took towards his home. I couldn't help but smile as I did whenever I was with him or whenever I even thought of him.
I couldn't help but gasp as I walked before Zach into this beautiful place. Words failed me and I just stared at everything that surrounded me. Although most of my surroundings were dark colours the atmosphere was filled with love and happiness. I know it sounds cheesy but it was the first thing to hit a person when they walked through the door. The next was what the dark colours actually were. Black curtains hung at the windows and black carpets and rugs graced the floor. Black flowers were everywhere and even though there appearance was the same each gave off such a unique fragrance. Portraits of the family were hung along the hall walls: I recognised Ciara and Mitchell - Zach's parents, Zoe and Evan - Zachs older siblings and then Zach himself. I turned a full circle, taking in what was in front of me. I shrugged and sighed then faced Zach. He took me in his arms and just held me for a brief moment. He pulled away and held me at arms length, staring deep into my eyes.
"Welcome home." We both smiled as he took my hand and led me past the portraits and down a long corridor. We entered the kitchen and I saw his parents seated at the table smiling at us both. That's when I saw their fangs. I was slightly taken aback as I was still trying to come to terms with the fact that I was in love with a vampire.
"How are you dear?" Ciara smiled at me showing her fangs without any concern that I was human. I stared for a brief moment but long enough for me to look into her eyes and see nothing but love for Zach and I. I felt like crying at the care she was showing towards her sons girlfriend who was of no blood relation to her and who wasn't a vampire.
"I'm fine thank you Mrs Belcourt. I take it Zach told you I found out." It was a stupid thing to say. He must have told them because they were sat there relaxed whilst showing their fangs. I realised that fact just as the words left my lips and cursed myself for being so stupid.
"We figured you knew. I mean you're here." That maybe wasn't meant to be a cryptic reply but I was still silently telling myself off so I was slightly confused. Then it hit me. The reason I had never been to Zach's house before. I never knew he was a vampire, so I didn't know his family were vampires. It would have been far to risky to ever let a human in their house without said human knowing the hidden secret.
