Chapter 15: Thank You For Your Time

"Hey guys." I said walking into the house. "Where's Carter?" I asked Dean.

She was sitting in the kitchen crying. I sighed and walked over to her. "Hey Cart. You alright?"

"No mommy. I got in so much trouble. I got kicked out of school."

"Cart I know you don't care that much stop faking." She giggles and sat up to face me. "Come on bub we're gonna get you back in school. Then you can cry."

She laughed and wrapped her arms around me. "Dean I'll be back. Go get Mavis from school please."

I drove Carter and I to her school in the Cadi because I'm feeling really good today. I walked in and to the principle's office. "Atticus I didn't expect to see you."

"Enough. Carter is staying in this school whether you like it or not. She's a good kid and I'll work with her on her language. I'm not driving another forty goddamn minutes just to get her to another school and I'm not moving either. She's five cut her some slack like my husband said, she doesn't know right from wrong when she's speaking because she's a kid. Now, I will drop Carter off in the morning and that's that. Thank you for your time."

I walked out and saw the front desk lady. "See you tomorrow Carter."

"See ya Suzy." She replies and I waved.

"Alright, now that everyone is in the living room everyone needs to shut up and listen." Dean and I stood before all the kids. Maverick was just smiling and giggling. Causing me to smile at him. "While I am gonna you guys are suppose to be on your best behavior for your father. Mavis and Carter help him with the baby please? Mavis help him with the house or Carter and the baby. You father is not a stay at home dad and this is all new for him."

"Yeah please help me out."

"Also Dean, we gotta start watching our language with these kids."

"Yeah I know but I can't help it."

"I can't either."

"Okay and one more thing. Don't repeat the bad words we say. Carter that goes for you mostly." I said sternly pointing at her. "And Mavis, you and I are going to talk upstairs on the roof."

She groaned which means I'm doing my job right by being a concerned parent. I left Dean with Carter and Maverick to watch Dodgeball while Mavis and I went to the roof.

"What's been going on lately with you? Your attitude getting out of hand, not being social with your family, only being social when Steven is over, not eating normally? What's going on kiddo?"

"I'm fine."

"Mavis I know you're not."

"I'm seriously fine."

"Mavis, I did the same thing when I was your age right now. Your father was dead ass worried about me the entire time. I actually fell into a depression. I can't let that happen to you. The things you're doing, are making your father worry that you're going to slip into a depression too. And if you're fine, well you've got a damn weird way of being fine."

She stared at me for a second and then started crying. She wrapped her arms around me and cried into my shoulder as we sat against her window sill outside. "I hate school so much." She said sobbing.

"I know baby girl I know. Talk to me about it, it does help ya know."

She shook her head and just sobbed. I wrapped my arms around her and brushed her hair trying to calm her down. I'm truly worried now. "Mom, I know I can talk to you about everything but this just doesn't seem the time to say anything."

"What? Why not? I'm your step-mom why the hell not? I'm here for you no matter what."

"But with work and stuff I don't want it to jeopardize anything for you."

"Nothing could do that, Mavy. You kids are my main priority and forever will be."

"I just don't want to talk about it."

She climbed back through the window and I nodded. I shed a tear thinking about when I went through what she did. I was bullied, beaten up, stressed with school, all that shit fucked me up. I just hope Mavis isn't going through what I did.
