Wonwoo rolled over and pulled his pillow over his head. Why couldn't whoever kept calling him just wait? What the hell was so important? Finally, the ringing, muffled by the fabric and stuffing of the pillow, stopped. Peace and quiet. And then it started up again. Wonwoo screamed into his mattress.
The pillow went flying across the room and he reached for his phone, ignoring the pain in his leg as he sat up.
"Is this Wonwoo?" asked the voice on the other end.
"MINGYU!?"
"Oh thank god you're okay, I got worried when you didn't come to school today and then you weren't answering my calls and I was afraid something happened to you and--"
"How did you get my number?" Wonwoo asked, thoroughly confused.
"What? Oh, Soonyoung gave it to me."
"How do you know I'm friends with Soonyoung?"
"I do my fare share of stalking," Mingyu replied, and Wonwoo laughed, although he wasn't sure it was entirely a joke. It was amazing how Mingyu could light up such a shitty day just like that. "Are you okay, though?" Mingyu asked, "Why weren't you at school?"
"I'm fine," Wonwoo replied, as he always did. Why did people always ask if you were okay when you clearly weren't? And why did he always say he was? Why couldn't say he was sad, say he was lonely? I'm fine. The lie had started to come automatically. It felt so natural that Wonwoo was almost afraid that he would forget the truth. But this life didn't feel like his truth at all, so he lied, thinking that maybe if he lied enough, it would be true.
"You're sure?"
"Yup. Just had a cold. I should be back tomorrow."
"Do you need someone to come over and eat ice cream and watch Yuri!!! on Ice with you? It's a service I provide."
Wonwoo smiled. Why did Mingyu have to be so damn nice? "No, I'm okay. Thanks for the offer, though. Rain check?"
"Yup. Anytime."
"Great. And thanks for checking on me. You're too nice for this world."
"I know." Mingyu's laugh was beautiful, even when it was mixed with static. "Bye. See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah. Bye."
Wonwoo hung up and saved Mingyu's contact to his phone. And with Mingyu's voice, that small, fleeting feeling that maybe Wonwoo could be happy vanished. He wished more than anything that he could tell Mingyu how he was really feeling, but why spoil the fun? If he could pretend just a little longer, even just for a day, maybe it would be okay. Maybe, just maybe, he could pretend until it wasn't a lie anymore. Because Mingyu was there. And he could do anything if Mingyu was there. It was honestly a little bit like magic.
