I'll Listen

The sound of the doorbell was muffled through the closet door, where Wonwoo was huddled in a pile of blankets, watching Anohana on his laptop.  In addition to that, he had headphones on and every sound from the outside world was virtually blocked out.  He didn't hear the second time it rang, either.  Or the third.  He did, however, hear when Mingyu banged on the door and shouted his name.  Wonwoo sighed, paused the episode, and threw his blankets off regretfully.

  "Wonwoo, I know you're in there!" Mingyu yelled.

  "I'm coming!" Wonwoo shouted back.  He raced to the door and flung it open, revealing a surprised, but not angry, Mingyu.

  "What do you want," Wonwoo asked coldly, his expression just as uninviting as his voice.

  "We should talk," Mingyu said.

  "Why?"

  "You can't keep me away forever."

  "Well I won't have to, will I!?"  Shit.  He was crying again.  Why was he so weak?  "I can't keep you away forever.  I don't have forever.  I just have until I'm dead and then I won't be your problem anymore."

  "You're not--"

  "Why can't you just be mad?"  Wonwoo's eyes darted around Mingyu's face.  "I don't understand.  I lied to you for so long.  Be mad!  Yell at me!  Why aren't you mad?  Why can't you just stop caring?  You're making me feel horrible.  Now I'm the one yelling at you and I'm the bad guy!"  Wonwoo sunk to his knees just inside the threshold.  "It would be so much easier if you just hated me."

  Mingyu stepped inside the doorway and closed the door quietly.  He knelt next to Wonwoo.

  "I'm not mad because I don't blame you for lying.  You were scared.  You didn't ask for this and you didn't want it to change your life.  You didn't want me to treat you any differently, right?"

  Wonwoo nodded.  "All I ever wanted was a normal life.  For awhile, you gave that to me.  It was fun, pretending with you."  A soft smile appeared on his lips.

  Mingyu stood up and held his hand out to Wonwoo.  "Come on.  You just need to talk, okay?  I'll always listen."

  Wonwoo shook his head, fresh tears slipping down his cheeks.  "I can't stand up."
