Lunch issues

A/N just a warning for some strong language here and probably throughout the entire story. Sorry for not putting a warning beforehand, my language just out of control in this chapter especially.

Violet's morning actually went fairly normally. No crashing into random strangers, or agonising over cheap science puns. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred, and she hadn't seen Wilbur at all. Not that she wanted to of course; she was glad that the interfering busybody had left her alone. She expected to see him after lunch, in science, but was already prepared for that. She would just ignore him, and turn a deaf ear to each pick up attempt, flex or joke. Hopefully the not so subtle signals would make it through his thick skull; maybe he'd eventually go away. Do you really want that?  a small, irritating part of her mind chirped up, but she quickly told herself yes I do , and the little voice quietened.

In the diner, she met Penny, who briefly told her Hiro's friend would be sitting with them at lunch. Nodding absentmindedly, Violet went to join the queue for  school dinners, (a choice she soon regretted as all they were selling today was mash potato. That was it. No veg, not meat or fruit. Nothing. Maybe the cooks were on strike. Either that, or someone was going through a midlife crisis.) She returned to the table with a potato filled tray, half tempted to bring up the mental state of the school staff for debate, to see Hiro's new friend already seated.

"Hi I'm Vi-" she paused mid-sentence as she saw who it was.

"I already know your name" the voice replied, grinning. Briefly, Violet considered the nun option again. This was starting to become a regular occurrence - which is something she'd never thought would ever happen to her, but clearly Wilbur enjoyed pressing her I'd-rather-be-a-nun-than-deal-with-you buttons.  Glancing between the two of them, Penny and Hiro shared a knowing look. "You guys seem to know each other," remarked the latter, deliberately avoiding Violet's glare.

"Is this the same Wilbur you were talking about NON STOP yesterday?" Added Penny, giving a not so subtle nudge to Hiro, who grinned mischievously back. Patience was going out the window. These two had betrayed her. Five long years of friendship flushed down the loo by this...this...

"Asshole!" blurted but Violet, before realising she hadn't given any context. "I called him an asshole. Many times." She hissed, but Wilbur's smile wasn't getting any smaller. He was clearly enjoying her discomfort, the masochistic fuck.

"You're going to make his ego even bigger!" Violet whined, but even she was faintly blushing. Well, maybe not faintly. She was currently resembling a tomato. "I won't sit with you," she tried to warn, but Hiro raised an eyebrow as if to say 'who WOULD you sit with?', and Violet promptly shut her mouth and plonked herself next to Penny. "You're all traitors," muttered Violet, but quietly enough so only Penny heard her, and smiled. The atmosphere for the next couple of minutes was awkward, to say the least. Violet kept glaring at everyone, in turn, and Hiro was rubbing the back of his head nervously, Penny couldn't stop bursting out in giggles at the tense atmosphere, and Wilbur...well he had forgotten all about the dispute and was just nonchalantly eating a sandwich.

Sighing heavily, Violet tried to start a conversation. Blatantly ignoring Wilbur, she turned to Hiro. "So how was tech club yesterday?"

"Oh, great yeah. Umm, I met some new people...you know who. We...errrr, we were looking into phonics and how they work, y'know with compressed gas which-"  Hiro looked around, to see that everyone's eyes were glazed over, and that they weren't really paying attention, except maybe Wilbur, but he knew all of these things already. Looking around at the group, Wilbur suddenly rose, stretching. "Well thank you for your hospitality" at this he looked directly at Violet, who felt a sudden pang of guilt, "but I really must be going. "

"Where are you going?" Asked Penny, looking worried. Hiro's eyes darted from Penny to Wilbur, as if assessing if Wilbur might pose any sort of threat to his already pathetic love life.  "Now that," replied Wilbur, "is an excellent question."

As soon as he had gone, Penny and Hiro turned their heads around to face Violet, who had taken to half hiding behind her hair. "What was all that about?" Questioned Penny, gesturing to Wilbur's retreating form.  She looked vaguely pissed, which was an odd look on her, like an angry chinchilla.

"I...I don't know, he just annoys me okay?! I'm sorry, I know I was rude, I just expect to see him here, not with you guys I - " Penny cut her off.

"Hey Vi, we're not cross, just go say sorry to him, that's all. You want to at least TRY to be civil, and fix this mess between you, right?" There was a brief pause, the ravenette hesitant to make amends to someone who had pushed her to Sisterhood twice. But she was supposed to be  a Super, and dealing with difficult people was Being a Hero 101. Besides, her stomach was starting to churn from the sour guilt she'd felt when Wilbur had looked at her with such disappointment as he walked away.  Violet bit her lip, hair falling over her eyes, before finally looking up at the two smiling determinedly. "You're right. Both of you are. I may not like him, but I can at least try not to be a dickhead. Alright." She glanced at Hiro. "Do you know where he could be?"

Hiro pondered for a minute. "Tech lab? Or outside, he mentioned he likes to go outside a lot, he could be out there. Or in another diner, he does like food." Chuckling, Violet rose up from her chair, clutching her bag, and noticed Wilbur had left his behind. Seizing it, she smiled at the lovebirds. "I could take this to him as well!"

"Great! Don't forget to come back and tell us everything, okay Vi?" Penny replied. Nodding, Violet took off in the direction Wilbur had left, a hoping she looked more certain than she felt.  She was gonna do it, say sorry, and then...hope she'd never see him again. Hey, she never agreed to be friends! Just apologise for being rude. Easy as 1, 2, 3...

A/N not as long as I would have liked, but I got writer's block halfway through. The next chapter should be longer...and more interesting. Thanks for reading!
