He continued to call her Chloe for the next day and a half as his fever continued to rage and then subside. Finally, it broke and he seemed more at ease and more lucid.
She spent her time feeding him soup, holding him upright while he puked, helping him drink and wiping down his sweat covered body with cool cloths.
She continued to keep the fire going but with every passing day their supply of wood dwindled and she wasn't sure if she could chop it herself.
After his fever broke he was still weak but together they managed to maneuver him to the bed she had been sleeping in.
She had finished soup for lunch and was wiping off the kitchen counters when suddenly the cabin was plunged into darkness.
The generator had run out of gas, she had no idea how to fill it or even where he kept the extra gas.
She set the soup aside and moved to throw more wood on the fire, she definitely couldn't lose her fire now that she didn't have a generator.
She glanced into the bedroom but Raphael was still asleep and even if he was awake she knew he didn't have the strength to do anything.
She fed him his soup and some water but he was too weak to do anything else and as the sunset, the cabin began to cool off despite her roaring fire.
She knew he needed more blankets than the few that she had covered him with and began her hunt for some.
She hadn't ventured to the loft above the kitchen yet but since she couldn't find any blankets downstairs she decided to see.
The loft was small and she couldn't stand up the entire way, to the left was a mattress laying on the floor with one thin blanket and two pillows on it. To her right a few boxes. Straight ahead was a small end table with a lamp and a tiny square window.
She took the blanket off the bed and set it aside to take downstairs with her, then moved to the boxes.
A part of her felt guilty looking through his belongings but she knew they had to have the blankets.
She opened the first box to find clothes, jeans, a leather jacket and other various clothing items. She set it aside moving to the next one.
Inside she found what looked like army fatigues, she paused. lifting the army jacket from the box.
A set of dog tags fell to the floor and she bent to pick them up, she didn't understand the numbers but the name on the first dog tag read Lieutenant Raphael Ramirez, the second dog tag had a different name. Chloe Maines.
The mysterious Chloe.
"Tess?" His voice called out from downstairs.
He sounded weak but close, grabbing the blanket she turned and hurried back down to him.
He was standing in the kitchen in his boxers, using the counter to try and hold himself up.
"You shouldn't be up."
"It's cold in here," He said.
"I know...there's no power."
"Damn generator," He said.
"I think so, I don't know how to fix it."
"How long have I been out?"
"About three days."
He winced and tried to stand upright but she could see he was struggling she hurried forward to steady him.
'How did I get back to the cabin?"
"You don't remember?"
"I remember you running off and the wolves....the ice."
She blushed with embarrassment, it had been a stupid plan and she nearly got them both killed.
"We made it back and I cleaned your wounds. I've been keeping soup in you and water and trying to help but you had a really high fever."
"Why would you help me?" He asked.
"You saved my life out there...I wouldn't be much of a human being if I didn't do the same."
"You were trying to get away from me because I'm a monster."
He turned and moved a little unsteadily towards the couch and the fire. She almost felt bad for him. His body was covered in scars that matched his face and over the past two days, she had started to feel less afraid and sorrier for him.
"Who is Chloe?" She asked following him to the couch.
He froze, his entire body going rigid as he slowly turned towards her. Something dark burning in his eyes.
"Where did you hear that name?" He asked, his voice low.
"You kept calling to her when you were sick, kept apologizing to her."
He stared at her for a minute and then turned heading towards the couch without an answer. He eased onto the cushions with a heavy sigh.
"Don't worry about it, she's someone from my past."
"Tell me how to restart the generator," She said rounding the couch.
"It will be fine for one night with the fire, I can probably get it tomorrow."
"Can I get you something?" She offered.
"Why are you doing this? why are you helping me?" He asked, his eyes scanning her.
"Because it's the right thing to do."
"I'll still have to kill you eventually," He said.
She closed her eyes and sighed heavily, then opened them and shrugged.
"Well, that's on you."
"I could use help taking a bath," He admitted.
"Okay, I'll go run some water."
She walked to the small bathroom turning on the water in the large claw foot bathtub. She laid out some towels for him and tossed a washcloth into the water.
Returning to the living room she helped him stand and wobble his way into the bathroom. He leaned against the sink and she shut off the tap in the tub.
"I'll let you alone then," She said.
She ducked out of the bathroom leaving him alone to indulge in a hot bath.
