Stepping out of the plane for the first time was scary and the idea of living in a country on the other side of the world was even more troubling. The humid air of Seoul hit me in the face like that time in summer camp where I got hit with a basketball. What also hit me was the sudden noise of a bustling city which I'd now have to start calling home. As I walk through the Incheon International Airport carrying my Nike backpack, my parents were insisting that I should have a look at the different stores and kiosks. Geez these asians really like taking care of their appearances, not to mention the guys are pretty cute.
Ever since my dad had received that job promotion all that my family and I had ever talked about was Seoul, Kimchi, pop culture technically anything to do with South Korea we either talked or discussed about it. We called for a cab to come for us, I mean it's not like I now Seoul like I know LA. So I wasn't just going to walk in a city I just stepped into, the cab drive wasn't as long as I'd thought it would be, maybe it was because I was in my phone the whole time. We pulled up right infront of the apartment complex in the area of Myeongdong, it was at least 35 stories high. Honestly I was quite impressed with how much effort dad's work company put in for us because of his promotion, Becoming the CEO comes with its benefits. The building was lustrous and modern with glass panels spanning 2 metres height wise, and the interior was fixed with chandeliers and marble accents. I admit it I was so excited to find our apartment, I didn't think I would start to like it here in Seoul so quickly, I mean I've lived in the US for 16 years. Dad was on the phone and Mom, well she was in awe admiring the scenery around us. I was just rummaging through my bag trying to find my phone, I definitely had to add this event into my notes - I start typing.
Dear Diary,
Day 1: So far Seoul is great, the atmosphere is great and our new apartment building is legit the coolest thing ever it's like a mansio/
I suddenly stop typing as my mum starts to tug on my t-shirt, I grab my suitcase out of the boot of the cab and follow my parents, we were greeted by the owner of the complex. A tall muscular man in his mid 20's with flawless features walks up to us only to be followed by a woman with a skirt shorter than my life span and hair colour of the 8th colour of the rainbow-that's how strange it was. The man greets us " Annyeonghaseyo I am Mr Kim but call me Lucas, and this is Gam Yumi" I reply back with a simple hi. I was a bit taken aback after Yumi shot me a death glare, probs another one of those popular wannabe girls. I am now really thankful that my parents decided to attend Korean lessons at school rather than Indonesian. Since preschool I've learnt all necessary subjects + korean, to my surprise it actually has a purpose now. We soon received the keys to our apartment after mom got along "swiftly" with Lucas, and used the elevator up to the 6th floor of the building. I see our apartment and rush to the door to read the sign saying A11, I quickly unlock the door to see an amazing apartment.
"Tilly Wang Welcome Home!" My dad says with a musical tone.
"Oh my god dad, why the musical voice? You know you can't sing" I say making him laugh
"Aww don't hurt your dad's feelings sweetie, go check out the apartment- I mean we have almost half of this floor" my mom says leaving me gobsmacked.
I run around the so called "apartment" this is like a mansion house floor whatever it is huge!! Clean white walls, a beautiful kitchen, three bathrooms, four bedrooms ah yes!
"I call dibs on the biggest bedroom" I shout out to my parents.
My parents walk in and are amazed by the view of their new home and start to explore the rest of the apartment. I walk into "my bedroom" and find a note on the bed it reads:
Dear Wang Family,
I am so glad that you all decided to move to Seoul because of your husband and father Mr Wang. I look forward to see you all and meet you in person soon.
Just giving you a heads up you are lucky to have neighbours like yours ;)
Sincerely,
Rob
Lucky to have neighbours like yours? At that moment I didn't have a clue of what that meant, could that mean we just have really nice neighbours? Was ge beung sarcastic and saying we have psycho neighbours?!?!? I'm just going to give this note to dad and he'll have to worry or think about what it actually means. All of our furniture was already shipped here a week before we arrived so all we had to do was to arrange it, the way we liked. Finally my room was fully set up and I could settle in and relax, my room was the biggest of all the rooms and was 5 by 6m, I had all the space I wanted. My bedroom had a loft where my bed was located alongside my TV and some shelves for storage/display. It also had a bathroom located directly underneath the loft and a fireplace, couch and a desk in the corner when exiting the bathroom - all put together and I had my ideal bedroom.
A thought crossed my mind, starting school - I wasn't the type to not like school but I was just nervous that's all. I didn't want to be behind in organising my stationary and school apparel, so I decided to grab everything out of the boxes labeled 'school. I placed the books on my desk and started writing my name on everything using my brand new sharpie - Tilly Wang, Year 11. My uniform was quite cute actually it consisted of a white shirt, black tie, black mid-legnth skirt, knee high socks and black boots probably the most stylish uniforms I've ever seen.
"Sweetie why don't you research a bit?" My dad said
"'Bout what?" I reply back
"Ummm Seoul?????" He says with a 'duh' look, he acts more like a teenager than me at times.
After Dad came into the room and suggested that I should research and get to know the culture of Seoul, I thought he was crazy. Soon after though I was curious to learn about Korean culture, I started searching for my MacBook through all the suitcases. While browing on Google I found out which dramas were popular in South Korea at the time, I soon found a interesting one called 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty'. As I started watching the first episode my eyelids felt really heavy and before I knew it I was fast asleep on my desk with my MacBook still open draining it's battery for no reason whatsoever.
I woke up with a massive headache, sometimes I have a thing against a devilish thing called Jetlag. Jetlag is not my friend and never will be, so I had to get used to my stupid friend Jetlag. If only there wasn't a bloody 16 hour time difference, I should've came from Australia where there is only a 1 and ½ hour difference. I walk to my backpack and grab my phone to my surprise I had messages. Mainly from my persistent friend Lily,
Lily🎵: YO DID YOU ARRIVE SAFELY?????
Lily🎵: U DEAD BRO??????
Lily🎵: DON'T THINK I WONT HESITATE TO SPAM YOU
Ban Ryu 🏀: Did you arrive Tilly, Text me when you have time plz
Minho👽: HELLO I WILL SPAM YOU IF YOU DON'T REPLY BUTTHOLE
Ahha Lol when will these people ever leave me alone, I check the time and WHAT?!! ITS 11AM
Moms gonna officially kill me.
