The Return

I awake slowly to see Impact staring at me, blushing slightly. He immediately freaks out as I rise, holding my head in pain.

"(Y-Y/N)! I'm sorry, I was just so worried! Are you okay?" He smiles awkwardly, still blushing.

"Y-yeah, I think. What... what happened?" I mumble, getting out of bed slowly. Impact helps me up, and puts my jacket back on for me.

"Don't you remember? You collapsed in the snow after your mom left. Do you... do you still want to go get her?" He asks caringly, as I nod my head decisively.

"Yeah...let's go."

****

"(Y/N), I saw your mom heading towards the Snow Fields. We should probably grab a weapon of some sorts, right?" Impact comments, looking back towards his house.

"Ah ah ah. I don't think you'll be needing any weapon, you two." A voice suddenly announces from within the shadows. I'm suddenly alert, looking around to see who's with us. Looking ahead, I see a man made from shadows emerge. A human man.

"Wait...a human? I don't understand, I thought that they-" I start, Impact's hand brushing by yours. The shadow raises a hand, and continues.

"-they don't exist? That they disappeared? You naïve monsters. In this world, I am the sole eternal ruler! Did your parents never tell any scary bedtime stories about me?" He jeers, unnerving the both of us.

"Damien...that's who you are, isn't it? What have you done with the Mayor?!" Impact yells, the shadow cackling.

"You're too late. Your Mayor is already done for! You can forget about rebuilding your little village. I've torn up all the pages of the Book of Life, and they should be scattered around the world by now!" He smirks, filling me with a sense of dread. Impact grasps my hand again, calming me down slightly.

"Anyway, I bid you farewell now. I have much to attend to. To be sure you don't attempt a pathetic rescue, I'll cover this bridge in darkness!" He laughs, disappearing beyond the shadows, which now blocks our exit to the rest of the world...

****

"Impact...please, there's no other way. We have to try to bring the Creator back!" I plead, turning towards him.

"I know...but how?" He asks, before I glare at him, answering the rhetorical question. He facepalms.

"Right. The Book of Life. But what about those three gems you were talking about? Where would something like that be?" He continues, as we walk back towards the plaque in the middle of the village.

"I don't know, Impact. Maybe it could be any odd jewel? Go look in your house, I'll look around town hall. Okay?" I decide, Impact nodding in agreement.

****

Eventually, me and Impact reconvene at the plaque. Impact gives a thumbs up, showing a pendant with an amethyst crystal. I also found a gem, a green peridot encrusted in a bookshelf. They both fit exactly into the spots, but one is still missing.

"...Wait (Y/N), have you checked your house yet?" Impact recommends, as I shake my head.

"We can both look. I think we're looking for something like a sodalite." I answer, as we head towards your house, on the opposite side of town.

"Oh, yeah! ....What's one of those look like?" He giggles, as we enter my house, shutting the door behind us.

"It's a blue rock. You'll know it when you see it. Now, if I can just remember where I put them..." I muse, clearing out the space under your desk, finding a tupperware box cloaked in dust.

"Here, Impact!" I grin, showing him the box. He frowns.

"Are you telling me that all of that is sodalite?" He questions, as I realise.

"Oh yeah...how do we know which one will work?" I giggle nervously, as you bring the box outside.

"Trial and error, I guess?" Impact replies, as he takes a lapis lazuli out the box. Placing the box under the plaque, me and Impact rapidly test each rock, but with no result. Eventually, we're down to ten more rocks.

"I don't get it, (Y/N)! How can none of these work?" Impact screams slightly, as I wipe some sweat off your skull.

"Well, all of these have been lazurite. So what if...what if it's noselite?" I recall, picking up a translucent white crystal ftom the corner of the box.

Impact giggles slightly, before asking, "How do you even know so much about rocks?"
I blush slightly, and giggle. "It's really just an old hobby of mine. You've gotta have something to do around here, right?"

He nods in understanding, as I try the nosean crystal. It clicks into place, and the plaque starts to shake, popping all of the crystals out.

"(Y/N)! Did we do something wrong?" Impact yells over the loud rumbling, catching the gems in his hands. As we watch the plaque, I'm suddenly surprised. The runes on the tablet seem to be... changing?

Then, the tremors stop. We both look at the plaque, confused.

"The runes look different...what do they say, (Y/N)?" Impact asks, scratching his head.

"It says two words: 'Look up'." I gulp, looking up into the sky. Suddenly, we're blinded by a bright light, as two orbs start to appear in the sky. I'm suddenly overcome with nausea, and pass out next to Impact.

****

Slowly opening my eyes, I shield my vision from the white orb now in the sky. Impact lies there, staring gleefully at the sky.

"(Y/N)! The sun...the sun is back!" He cheers, before we're hit by a burst of wind.

"So this...this is what "spring" feels like..." I gasp, laughing along with Impact. The permafrost you're lying on feels soft to the touch, and is slowly thawing away.

"Who knew it was this easy, huh?" Impact laughs, as we both stand up. The shadows still encircle the town, but the smell of fresh air gives me new hope. Looking around, I spot something like a book on the ground.

"Impact, that can't be...." I gasp, running over to pick it up. Brushing off the snow, Impact looks over my shoulder in surprise.

"That's it! The Book of Life!" He exclaims, as I suddenly turn around to give him a hug.

"Impact! We did it! The Creator heard us, isn't that great?!" I cheer, Impact surprised as I jump on him. He blushes, and pushes me off of him.

"Well, what are you waiting for? Let's read it!" He smiles, and I nod ecstatically.

I suddenly frown, and flick through the few pages remaining of the book. There's depictions of humans and monsters, the sun, the moon... and then there's a single page, covered in frantic scribbles. The rest have been torn out.

"Right...the other pages were torn out by Damien...that fiend." I sigh, closing the book. Suddenly, a piece of paper floats towards me from the air. Impact catches it with one hand, and passes it to me. I flinch, as sonething bounces off my head. Looking behind me, I see a fountain pen lying in the snow.

Picking it up to examine, I notice that the body has an amethyst, peridot, and noselite encrusted into it. It seems to give off a faint glow as I hold it in my hand, and feels warm to the touch. Impact reads the piece of paper out loud.

"I was unable to save this world before. So now it is your duty to restore it to what it once was, (Y/N). That pen will allow you to draw in the Book of Life, but only once you restore the missing pages to act as your 'template'. I hope to speak to you again soon....The Creator!" Impact announces, looking at the pen I hold.

"Wow, (Y/N)! You must be pretty special to be given a job like that!" He smiles, as I grin.

"I can restore the village...but I don't have a template." I say, before Impact gives you the piece of paper.

"You do now. There's a template on the back. It says "Hero"." He explains, as I rest the page on top of the closed book.

"Well, I better get to drawing." I grin, Impact smiling back.
