"You're not really human, are you?"

Deadwood

I stretch and yawn, and slowly get out of bed. My head is still pounding from the festival last night. I look at my bedside table, and see the rose Impact gave me sitting in a glass of water.

I just thought...since it was made by the Book of Life, it will probably never wilt...it's nice to know Emily's able to draw in it, too.

I get dressed into a light pink t-shirt with a snowflake on it, 3/4 jeans, some boots, and a blue jacket. Oh, and my friendship scarf. I also decide to wear my hair down today.

Y'know, I wonder what happened to Papyrus and Mettaton? Impact never told me. I just assumed they fled like everyone else... I'll ask him at some point.

Heading out, I notice Impact sitting in the square near the plaque, signing something to Yvonne, with a book open on the ground next to him.

"What are you two up to?" I ask, sitting down next to Impact.

"I'm trying to learn how to speak sign language! I understand what she's saying, but I figured since Yvonne lives with me now, I might as well try make it easier for her by learning how to sign myself." Impact replies, Yvonne frowning as he tries to sign the same.

"[You know, I'm not deaf, Impact.]" She signs back, a grimace on her face. I assume Impact completely butchered it.

"I just thought it was a nice thought, Yvonne. Anyway, why don't you talk?"

"Impact! You can't just ask her why she doesn't talk!"

"[I...honestly don't know. I've never spoken in my life. Although I do understand what you're saying to me...]"

"So you never learnt how to talk? We could teach you if you'd like!" Impact smiles, before we're all deterred by a sudden earthquake.

"[What the hell was that?]" Yvonne signs, Impact looking at her sternly for swearing

"Oh no...that can't be good. Last time there was an earthquake, Frostwind was-" I start, before being cut off by a panicking Emily who just ran towards us.

"(Y/N)! Damien has just awoken Deadwood!"

"What? Deadwood? I thought he was hibernating for another thousand years!"

"Yeah, he was, until Damien woke him up - and now he's very, very angry. I mean he's infected by shadow, but he is absolutely livid. Gonna destroy the village kinda livid. I really gotta go!" She babbles, running on the spot.

"Alright, good luck Emily!" I sigh, and she sprints off.

[Emily's POV]

As I run towards the forest gate, I stop in my tracks as I see someone standing in front of the gate, as if they were waiting for me - as if he was waiting for me.

Damien.

"I thought I'd find you here. Did you not like the fact I awoke my old tree friend? That's awfully rude...I was just trying to reconnect!" The shadow creature laughs and shrugs, and I growl.

"You have an interesting taste in friends, then, seeing how they always want to destroy everything." I remark, and Damien frowns.

"...Tch. You're not really human, are you? If you were, you would justify my actions, or we could settle things peacefully. I don't usually waste my time talking to those stupid monsters, so think yourself as an exception. Until next time." He states condescendingly, before fading into the shadows once more.

I open the Forest Gate to find that roots interlaced with shadow have sprouted all throughout the Twilight Woods, and are leading up to a giant tree in the distance, which I assume to be Deadwood, but...he looks different. Obviously not as friendly as in the stories.

As I finally approach the behemoth tree, I look up to see some corrupted acorns hanging from the branches. But before I'm able to start climbing, a pair of giant red eyes start to gleam at me, and the bottom of the tree opens up to reveal a mouth spewing shadow.

"You meddlesome hero! The time of shadow is apon us!" He gargles, his voice definetly sounding wrong. Something is up here, and Damien is to blame. Hopefully I don't hurt Deadwood too much...he IS an ancient spirit who protects the forest.

I'm interrupted from my thoughts as some shadow walkers and bats start emerging, and I quickly start to clamber up Deadwood. Maybe there's a way inside from the top, since his mouth is too dangerous to go in right now.

As I'm climbing, I accidentally kick one of the acorns, shattering it into pieces. The branch I'm holding onto shakes violently as Deadwood flinches in pain, bringing me to the ground. I land on my feet due to my wings slowing the descent.

I see the shadow covering Deadwood fade away a little, and his eyes turn blue for a brief second, before switching back to red.

I see now! By destroying the acorns, Deadwood gains back control a little!

I climb again and again, shooting the acorns whilst warding off shadow bats, who nearly hit me multiple times. Eventually, all the acorns are destroyed, and Deadwood relaxes, opening his mouth in able for me clamber into the hollow chamber inside.

The inside of Deadwood is even worse than the outside, shadow geysers erupting from everywhere. A hooded figure stands in a shadow cage suspended on the ceiling, who chucks me a heart to get me back up to full health.

I hear a rumble, and I see the shadow geyser next to me start to take shape into a creature I've never seen before. I think I'll call it... a Shadow Ghoul.

"Argh...monsters...corruption...Damien..." The ghoul groans, before charging towards me. I duck, and it bumps into the wall, damaging itself a little. It growls, turning around to face me again as I shoot it several tines with my acorn blaster. I've never been one for ranged weapons, but I guess it'll have to do.

The ghoul eventually tires, and jumps up to cling onto the bottom of the shadow cage. It flings balls of shadow at me, which I shoot down with my blaster before they hit. Then, the ghoul plunges down from above, and I swiftly dodge out of the way, as he body slams into the ground. That seems to have been the last hit.

I watch as the shadow ghoul fades away into nothing, and the shadow pillars recede. I hear a yawn resonate throughout the room, and I see the shadow cage break. Unlike Yvonne, this fellow gracefully descends to the ground with his long cloak, until he lands, and bows.

"Thank you for rescuing Deadwood. I am Ukarl. I travelled here when the shadow appeared, wanting to protect the forest spirit. But it seems I was too late, and ended up getting stuck. I owe my life to you, as well." Ukarl explains, and I nod.

"It's no problem. At least Deadwood is okay now!" I smile, the behemoth laughing in response.

"THAT WAS A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE I NEVER WANT TO RELIVE. NOW IF YOU'LL EXCUSE ME, I'D LIKE TO FINISH MY THOUSAND-YEAR SLUMBER." Deadwood croaks, and I beckon Ukarl to climb out of the mouth, before Deadwood falls asleep again.

"You know, I always wondered how the spirits of season can do their job so well when they're asleep..."
