chapter three: bugs

The words vibrated against hidden speakers, the amount of pedestrians giving blank stares to the man speaking in italian. A few italian locals quickly seemed to fade away with the setting sun, fazing the rest of the open pedestrians.
This is not a test, this is your Emergency Broadcast System. Announcing the commencement of the annual purge sanctioned by the Italian Government. Weapons of class four and lower have been authorized for use during the purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime (including murder) will be legal for 48 continuous hours. Police, fire, and Emergency Medical services will be unavailable until the morning after tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. When the purge concludes. Blessed be our new head of government and Italy... A nation reborn. May God be with you all.
The man with an italian accent spoke with such a cold voice that it sent a rush of cold chills down the group's spine.
"Is that what I think it is?" Karen whispered.
What was meant to be a fun night out in Italy seemed to turn into a nightmare.
"We're in a foreign country, trapped in a...purge?" Kaylee rhetorically asked.
"I told you guys we were flying to our death!" Karen hissed, flailing her arms in the air.
"Who planned the trip?!"
"It's their fault, who was it?"
The arguements seemed to escalate, their voices echoing into the night.
"Guys!" Jessica exclaimed.
The group mellowed down, fear swarming them all. Being out in the public wasn't much of a good idea, and someone needed to take charge or plan in order to survive.
"We need to find somewhere to hide." Karen muttered.
"Can't we stay in the hotel?" Colin asked, frowing.
"Do you really think that's a good idea?" Jessica questioned, her eyes scanning the group.
"If we don't move soon, a crazy psychopath will pass by and shoot us. Let's please start moving." Jackie begged, outstretching her arms as if ushering the group.
"Shouldn't we try to take advantage of the free stuff though?" Brittany spoke up.
The group of young adults froze, weighing the risk of what could happen. It wasn't everyday you were stuck in an ancient country and you can take stuff without being punished.
"What's off limits?" Karen began.
"We will not take stuff!" Kaylee scowled.
"Hey, come on. You know what this means?" Max interrupted. "We can legally boil everyone—"
