chapter four!
carter meets war

sometime tuesday morning!

Carter recognized optimism was a habit of winners. Her father told her that, her teachers encouraged that, and it was pretty damn hard to be pessimistic when she'd finally found friends.

Sooner rather than later, the other shoe was going to drop. The blooming friendship Carter would find with the group would come to a slamming halt. That day wasn't supposed to be today.

"You stood up for him and not me!" Maya's voice rang out into the classroom.

Carter looked up in alarm to see a very disheveled Riley and Maya storming into the classroom. The tension in their voices, not the volume, is what brought Carter out of her inner thoughts in alarm.

She watched as Riley's mouth opened and shut while she tried to find the right words. "I — I'm not standing up for him!"

"Woah," Carter said warily. "What's going on?"

The two girls ignored her. From Carter's view, the back of Maya's head didn't seem very impressed. "You didn't disagree with him, Riley."

Farkle turned in his seat to face Carter. "You aren't in economics with us, but Lucas finally snapped back at Maya."

It hadn't taken Carter long to figure out the little game of tug-a-war Lucas and Maya played with each other. Maya would test his nerves with nicknames poking at his Texan heritage he loved so much, and Lucas would either ignore it to make her angry, or brush her off with southern charm.

Riley's hands wound into fists at her sides. "Well when you really think about it he wasn't wrong!"

"Uh —" Carter was at a loss.

"This sounds pretty bad." Farkle acknowledged.

It did sound pretty bad. He had known Maya and Riley since the first grade, and they'd never fought for this long before. It was starting to worry him. A lot.

Maya threw her hands up. "Who cares?"

Carter leaned towards Farkle. "What does Lucas making fun of Maya have to do with Riley?"

Farkle's lips pursed. "Lucas called Maya short in front of everyone. Maya turned to Riley expecting her to say something back to him for her, and well, all Riley said was that he wasn't wrong."
