chapter nine! carter meets donnie barns
.・:*:・゚'✫,'✫'゚・:*:・˙
Mid September had to be Carter's favorite time of the year. Aside from the holidays, and her father's birthday. Maybe even her own birthday. See — she was a girl that craved peace. Solitude. Facts. Comfortability. That's not to say Carter was boring — her friends would heavily disagree. The season of late fall, early winter was a subtle, routine-filled season. Unfortunately for her, every single one of her friends were naturally attracted towards chaos.
Carter let her mind drift as she stacked her, almost obnoxiously tall, stack of books and novels in her hands from the inside of her locker. Her backpack was already full of all her binders and notebooks, but she insisted on carrying everything else with her instead.
"Locker buddy!"
Lucas's voice was a like a low, southern breeze.
"Hey, Lucas," Carter did her best to look up at him with a smile.
Unfortunately for Carter, a growth spurt hadn't hit yet, not even in the eighth grade. That left Lucas to practically tower over her. Farkle was a few inches shorter than Lucas, but still warranted Carter to look upward to meet his eyes. Zay was closest in height to her, but she couldn't tell him that without making him obsessed about it.
"How are you, darlin? Let me grab those books from you," Lucas said, grabbing the huge stack of novels and textbooks from Carter's hands.
"Oh," said Carter, adjusting to the sudden loss of weight in her hands. "You don't have to, cowboy, really —"
Lucas laughed. "This stack is taller than you are. Seriously, I don't mind."
Carter agreed to met up with Lucas and Zay to hang out at the bench in front of their history class before first bell to study for their series of quizzes ahead of them.
Carter gripped the straps of her backpack as Lucas led them through the busy hallway. Even with a stack full of books he towered over half the student body.
As they approached Zay, Farkle's voice sounded from down the hall. "Ladies and gentleman of the hallway!"
"It's yearbook time!" Riley says excitedly. Taking notice of Carter and Lucas, she froze. "Oh, Lucas, you're carrying her books."
Maya's head whipped over to her friends in silent alarm. Carter and Lucas shared a confused look.
"It's nothing, Riles!" Maya's voice oozed with a faux, sugary tone that Riley wouldn't detect. "It's just Lucas being a good friend. Right, Lucas?"
