Rows upon rows of guards rounded the corner. And the man leading it...
Jason.
Jason signaled for his men to stop, about halfway down the corridor. I could hear the metal of the guns shake as the soldiers positioned themselves.
"You're outnumbered," Jason called. "If you give yourselves up, I may just consider sparing your little savior."
Tyler looked around to us. He kept determination on his face, but I could see flickers of doubt.
"The risks' all part of it, isn't it?" Tyler called back. "Otherwise where's the fun?"
He turned back to us. "Are you two ready?"I exchanged a glance with Ley. She gave a weak smile, then turned back to Tyler, giving him a firm nod.
"Someone better have a plan!" Ley exclaimed.
I glanced at her. "Don't look at me!"
"I had plans to get you out, but the behavior of Jason was tricky to avoid. My plan wasn't enough." Tyler pointed out solemnly.
Suddenly Jason called out again. "I'm not giving you the rest of time to make a decision! Come out and your friend will be spared, or run and die."
I looked at Tyler and Ley. "Well, let's think about this logically," I began, "we're outnumbered, outgunned, and if we move an inch around that corner we sign our own death certificate. But if we could sneak past them."
"How would we do that? They're lined wall-to-wall in the corridor, there's no way we could get past them." Ley pointed out.
"Your pessimism concerns me, Agatha..." I huffed.
"Your audacity concerns me, Kas!" She breathed back at me.
"It's the only thing we've got right now." I told her. "Now, we just need to find a way past that wall."
Tyler suddenly jerked, his eyes widening. "Lights," he said. "Use the lights."
"The lights?" I inquired. "That's it! If we can flip the lights we can go past unseen."
"There no controls even relatively near us." Ley pointed out.
"There doesn't have to be," I told her, "we have him." I pointed to Tyler.
Tyler's eyes flashed. "The gun."
"Exactly." I said, starting to smile.
"Shoot out the lights. It will provide a cover of darkness, just dark enough for us to slip by."
"But I won't be able to shoot out all of them. Once they turn around and see us running, we'll be shot dead."
"But we may just have enough time to go around the corner on the other side of the corridor."
"Well... It's better than nothing. If it's a chance for survival, I'll take it."
"Good," I said. "We need to wait till they start advancing. It will get them off the walls, so we can have room to go past."
Jason's voice echoed through the halls. "Last chance!"
Tyler sneered. "You think I came in here for nothing? I escape or I die, It's as simple as that."
I could hear Jason scoff, but he said nothing.
But then I heard a voice, next to Jason, faint, but still audible.
I recognized it immediately. Jay.
Without thinking, I rose and stepped out from behind the corner. I wanted to face this asshole one last time if I was to die.
