They were quite happy, living in the water beneath the planet's surface. The underground caverns had no light source; they were dark, and the water was deep. It was a hostile environment. But where humanity would have wasted away, hidden from the sun, they adapted and thrived.
The hidden sea kept them safe from the dangerous world above; there they were safe.
It wasn't until elemental creatures, who brought tiny suns, found their home. These were as unforgiving as a rock and reflected the light they carried with them. There was no escaping-beings from the stars had found them.
Their only hope was to defend their home until the last warrior fell.

Humanity learned that they did not have a right to everything in the universe-and some things are better left undiscovered.
Thankfully, that time all they lost were a couple of rovers.
