CHAPTER EIGHT: silver springs
-
the arm around millie's waist tightens just as she starts to awaken, her eyes fluttering at the feeling of sunshine hitting them just so. not fully coming to realize what she had been doing until the hand at her stomach started caressing the skin through the fabric gently, stilling after a moment of quietness and letting sleep befall them again.
her skin felt like it was burning by his touch, and all she had wanted was to embrace it, but millie knew she couldn't. if she could throw caution to the wind, and know for definite that what they had would stay, she would. but she doesn't and just like all those spare times before, millie sneaks out of the bed as quietly and gently as possible.
it always leaves her cold and empty without him.
but, there's no time to think about that. well—there's actually all the time in the world to think about that, but none of which millie would like to waste. pondering aimlessly over what couldn't or could have been.
"you alright there honey?" mary's voice speaks softly, suddenly, startling the girl for moment making her to jump.
"oh! yeah, yeah i'm fine, i-i just have to pee," she explains awkwardly, rubbing at the ache behind her head where she had bumped it a second ago.
the woman smiles. it's a funny little smile she gives her. it's almost as if she knows something millie doesn't. "don't let me get in your way dear, i'll get back to breakfast," mary says and relief at being able to leave the conversation makes millie sigh. that is, until she's pulled back in at the last minute. "you slept well though i hope? you both were always little cuddle buddies as children. oh, how adorable!"
how do i melt into a puddle on the floor and away from this conversation?
millie flushes brightly at mary, pieces of messy hair construing her view, and thankfully hiding the blush more. "yeah—um we were fine, but i've really gotta...you know?" please understand!
"oh! sorry dear go ahead."
millie spares no second chances this time and bounces out of the conversation, straight to the restroom without so much as a glance back. "jesus," she breathes suddenly much more anxious than she had been yesterday, hastily trying to relax her mind and just concentrate on the task at hand.
sure, she had lied about having to pee, but she could at least brush her teeth while she's at it. nobody likes morning breath.
millie's just finished taming her hair when there's a knock on the door, opening slightly and a head peaking through at her acknowledgment. it's finn, and he grins messily at her, obvious traces of syrup spread across his lips and even drips down his chin. it's cute. very cute, and millie has to bite back the urge to throw caution and just kiss him like she wants.
she won't. but, hey a girl can imagine right?
finn doesn't notice her apparent inner monologue that wonders if his lips would taste like the syrup or the breakfast he's eaten. perhaps both? anyways, he doesn't realize his best friends thoughts thankfully, (he wouldn't be able to handle it quite truthfully) and is all smiles still. an exciting gleam to his eyes.
"mom made chocolate chip pancakes."
"i can see that. you've got stuff all over your face finn." if millie sounds a little more breathless than usual, he doesn't question.
