Damian
Whoosh!
"Aviso!"
Swiveling my head in the direction of the voice, I was met with a fast, round, black and white projectile. Shifting to the side at the last second, a gust of air flew past my head, a slight sting on my ear.
"Oy!" I called out grasping my left ear.
"Tienes que estar mirando la pelota, primo." Cortez said pointing at me then the ball. Slapping me on the back as he jogged pass me to retrieve his ball.
Being an avid soccer player, Cortez was tall and lean. He sported his dark hair in a buzz cut with a tapered chin strap and had our family's signature deep brown eyes. I turned to him,
"Mira la pelota?" I asked bewildered, "I wasn't even playing."
"Doesn't matter," he chuckled as he started to juggle the soccer ball with his knees.
"Tienes que estar vigilante."
I huffed, shaking my head.
"Vigilante, okay."
Swiping the ball out of the air I asked,
"So you ready to go or what?"
Frowning, Cortez went to grab his jacket off the lawn chair behind us.
"Que pasa, Damian? Why you in such a hurry? "
Throwing the ball into the yard I pull out my phone to check the time.
5:40 pm.
"I just wanna meet up with the twins and head out before it gets too dark. You know The Slant is best when you start off with some sun." I say as we leave my front yard.
Pulling out the keys to my black and blue 2006 Ford Mustang, I start the engine and we head downtown. As trees and green foliage transition into lively streets and city lights, I start to notice something.
I'm not sure what's going on but tonight seems different. It may just be the atmosphere but there's this vibration in the air. The energy is high but there's something else, I just can't quite put my finger on it...
We pulled into a grey, dim, almost deserted parking lot hidden behind a few trees that trailed off onto the side of the road. The only other car was a white Mustang, a 2009 Red Stripe Coupe. Such a beauty. As we pulled up, our friends Antoine and Asher stepped from around the side of the car. Antoine and Asher are twins. Their ivory skin, straight noses and blue/brown irises were identical. The only real difference between their looks was that Antoine's hair was sandy blond while Asher's was a strawberry blond. Cortez and I met them sophomore year in high school when they transferred from Lisses, France. It was then that we were introduced to Parkour. Parkour is a method of physical and mental training which allows one to overcome obstacles in both urban and natural setting while using the environment to their advantage. Tonight we're starting off with a favorite, The Slant. This free run course starts off with a giant garnet sculpture slanted smoothly on the side. It begins at the edge of a park downtown and leads the way to roof tops, railings, and other structures.
However, we need to start after dusk because it may or may not be completely legal.
Antoine greeted Cortez and I as we got out of the car.
"Salute!"
"Hey man, you ready?" Asher asked as we walked closer.
"Always."
I tied my hair up into a topknot, flexing my arms in the process. After we dapped them up, I dropped my keys in my jacket pocket, zipped it up, and we took off into the breezy summer night.
