Late July

It's late July
Crickets whisper
Of time gone by

The atmosphere here inside my mind
Is deadly as much as it is kind

I can't remember
When was the last time I felt so peaceful?
With the sky smiling down on me like a wilting sunflower
I can't remember
And I really don't need to, now that I think of it

I guess this is just a pause
A break in the action
A time to remember
And take it all in
So that next time I don't forget

When was the last time
I had so, so many arms
To catch me if I fall
When was the last time
I had so many voices
To comfort me when I'm afraid

When was the last time the world
Could let me weep in peace
And sleep for as long as I needed
When was the last time I woke up
With dreams still dancing in front of my eyes

When was the last time we held hands
And held each other in a sweet embrace
When was the last time I saw you
Heart to heart, eye to eye, and face to face
When was the last time I told you
How beautiful you really are
And how much your touch feels as though
The world has led us on a road that does not diverge
But coalesces in the middle of a field
Where flowers grow in abundance
And butterflies flutter peacefully in the breeze
A breeze that blows your hair in front of your eyes
Covering them
And making me remember
That time is more than a number
It is a story
An emotional romance

When was the last time
That romance had a happy ending?

When was the last time
It was late July
And the crickets whispered
Of time gone by?
