Final Embrace

What I find most inspiring
Is how tightly people hug
When they say goodbye

It's as if they have not expressed to you yet
Just how much you have meant to them
And they are trying to show you just how much they care
By emphasizing the strength of their embrace

And it's simply really sweet to know
That so many of your friends
Can't bear to let you go
Can't bear to see the pain behind your smile
As they see it for the last time
Can't imagine or even fathom
The ways you have impacted them
And no one can
So we can only understand that
By accepting how much we don't know about each other
Even at this point
When we have come to know each other so well
That our sentences sound the same
And our final embraces
Seem to stop in time
But still don't seem to last long enough

Like that time
You put your head on my shoulder
And I wanted the car ride
To last forever

And the time we walked
Through the downtown together
When we didn't need anyone else
And we were happier that way

And the time I sat down by the pond
Hid my face with a hand
And let the tears start flowing
Those tears
Which I had been holding back for years
And you were there next to me
Holding me close
Holding me tight
Like you never wanted to let me go

Truly, I tell you
I am still inspired
By how tightly you held me
When we said goodbye
