Looking at the small child, you wouldn't think much about him. Maybe not pay attention to him at all. He was pale with dark hair and dark eyes. His clothes might have once been something close to a school uniform under all the accumulated dirt and wrinkles. Yet here he was, asking to join.

Jeesh. Just because they had a couple of brats with them, didn't mean they were some kind of orphanage. Even though she was twenty-five years old, it didn't mean she was ready to settle down with a bunch of kids yet.

She had overheard from Diamante and Trebol talking with him that he was going to die within three years and two months according to his own prediction due to a disease that was slowly spreading throughout his body. Then Rocinante, known now as Corazon, walked through the door. His large build mirrored his older brothers', yet there was always that chance moment where he would trip on nothing. Which he did, earning laughter from the two kids which they were hit for. He really didn't like it when people laughed at him because of his clumsiness. Sitting down in his chair, I took that as my cue to get him some tea.

Somehow Baby 5, the little eight-year old girl, beat me to it. She went into my kitchen. And since she hadn't cooled it down, Rocinante spit hot tea everywhere.

"Baby 5! How many times have I told you to stay out of my kitchen?! Here's a rag! Go clean that up right now!"

"Yes ma'am."

Sitting down on the couch in the corner of the room, I opened up the new book I had gotten last week and began to tune out my surroundings, only hearing bits and pieces of what everyone was saying. The sound of breaking glass made me lift my head to see what had happened, only to find that kid had been thrown out the window. Now I had to pay for a new window to be put in.

A week passed and things were going smoothly. At least, until dinner that evening was going relatively well when that same kid came around. I guess Doflamingo had been listening to my grumbling about the window and had taken that as an excuse to invite him.

Stupid bird-brain.

I had finished my dinner before anyone else had, so I went back to my book, but I kept an ear to the conversation this time out of curiosity. I learned a few things about the kid then. One) the kids name was Trafalgar Law and he was ten years old. Two) He was from the White City of Flevance. And three) he had the White Lead Disease. All these things made me pause and think. A kid his age shouldn't have to go through that kind of 'hell'. Instead, he should be laughing and playing outside. But not him apparently. He didn't talk much, either because of being antisocial or what else she didn't know. He was sort of polite when she spoke to him later. And he was very smart. Unlike the two we already had, Trafalgar Law was the kind of kid I could grow to enjoy.

When Law had been officially accepted into the family, I made damn sure he figured out how I treat people I liked. I made sure he slept enough. Ate everything on his plate during meals. Let him know that I didn't believe his disease was contagious, hugging him when he really needed it.

To hell with personal space. Everyone else had grown used to it and he will too. Trafalgar Law would learn that as he was now my family. And God help who dared to hurt my family in front of me. Be it man or disease.
